SOP For Installation of Bakki Showers to achieve TDO Saturation Can't Post

Dear AllSmileSmileSmile,

To ensure optimum koi growth and health, most of us would rank genetics, food and oxygenation as critical factors in order of priority. Various methods of oxygenation and saturation of pond water are available, some more costly than others.

From the experiences of fellow koi kichis, using a bakki shower could help achieve TDO saturation in pond water without significant increase in costs if you run the clean water returns through the bakki shower.

After some discussions, the following SOP was developed. Not all pond systems are the same, so some adjustments and modifications may still be necessary.

Since this SOP was developed in the spirit of sharing, let's receive it in kind with positive spirit and suggest improvements if any.

SOP For Installation of Bakki Showers to achieve TDO Saturation

1. Place the full size 6 ft long Bakki Shower tray system in a cool area -- the lower the temperature, the better. Best to be shaded or in a cool, planted area.

2. Ensure sufficient space around the Bakki Shower to allow breeze/wind blowing through to help with degassing and evaporation to cool pond water. Use of industrial fans to blow through the showers is recommended.

3. Ensure pump capacity or flow rate of at least equal to the pond tonnage per hour (i.e pond turnover of at least once every hour) through the bakki trays if your water intake is from the clean water filter chamber and the bakki shower is the sole return of filtered water into the pond. If you run a separate bakki water circuit independent from the filtration chambers, you may opt for a pond turnover rate through the bakki shower of once every 1.5 hours.

4. Ensure sufficient height between bakki trays for water drops. If the final bakki shower return can be arranged to drop from a greater height to pondwater surface, the higher, the better.

5. If you can afford the expensive BH, use them. Cheaper media such as lava rocks, Japanese mats etc will also work.

6. Use more than one pump to avoid total malfunctioning of Bakki Shower and catastrophic plummeting of TDO levels and fish fatalities. Always use additional aeration aids such as hiblows to ensure sufficient alternative aeration in case of Bakki Shower breakdown.

7. Keep your stocking rate to 1 large koi (above 70 bu) to every 3 tons of water. The pond turnover rate through the bakki shower should increase in tandem with any increase in stocking rates.

8. Life is precious. Be happy and enjoy your kois.

Thanks Jeff ,

Below is my contribution and compiled from comments of others like Larry (Larz1) posted in another thread , i am sure you can expand on it.
To sum your (and others) comment as 'KPI' for good clay: Checklist :

a) Inhibit green water via phosphate reduction. - hence settlement dumping is key.
b) Sumi enhancement via silicates and other minerals.
c) Removing pollutants via adsorption.
d) Removes turbidity giving polish look to water.
e) Trace minerals good for kois health.

My feedback on your SOP , seems like concentrating to reduce temp, if so why not just harness the low temp at night and off the BS in hot afternoon ? And use metal rather than plastic materials for better heat conductivity?

A very good SOP indeed, and I think the idea of putting together a variety of these together in a "Check List" fashion is excellentCool One thing that might be beneficial to add (over time) is links to properly installed systems for people to see. Some people are "visual learners".
One thing you might consider adding to this one is how to incorporate a protein skimmer into the bakki water return. Many new installations frustrate their owners with loads of foam...Tongue

Hi Bro TS,SmileSmileSmile

Sorry I took a while to respond. I have already done the research on koi clay and put my thoughts together, but havent found time to write yet as I was in China for extended periods the past few weeks.

Also, this is only for Bakki and I will post the Koi Clay in another thread. Just found out that someone wrongly jumped to the conclusion that I was desperate to start this as my own kingdom thread and that the response was lousy (since I took so long to write due to work) so meaning I am posting bragging rubbish. Eh, I was writing based on the bakki system in his pond some moreCrazyCrazyCrazy, so if bragging (you and I know there is no bragging here) must be bragging for him lah. Actually I wanted to name the SOP after him, but he too modest and say no. Now he say I bragCrazyCrazyCrazy.

Aiyoo, how like that? All SOPs are intended to be based on everyone's systems or observations or research which are good. They will be posted under the relevant Forum sections as separate threads according to the rules.

I really want to give up, but since Brother David say do a good deed and encourage us to keep it up, let's try our best. Brother David say what we do will be one up on JR, but I never have any intention to one up anybody lah. JR is top expert in the West and so up, die die also we cannot reach his ankles lah.

But let's try to do a good jobSmileSmileSmile.

Cheers,
Jeff

Bro Jeff, nobody can know you and think you are beating your own drumWink
You have been a most helpful and humble poster here for a long time and I've never seen you act boastful. You have a good idea going here with your "SOP" posting(s) and the hobby can only benefit from moreCool We all borrow from each others experiences and knowledge and that is how "Wisdom" is acquired. Sharing this way can only be a good thing and I hope you continue as well as you have begunSly
