Pond Filter	Can't Post

please help me to set up the filter system to cater for pond size=4mx4mx2m.
ps:i have read the forum for pond construction by Mr Hans Ham,if possible please advise me how to calculate the volume & size needed for building the pond mentioned above.

Hi,

A pond with 4m x 4m x 2m will have a volume of 32 cubic metre and this convert to 32 tons of water (1 cubic metre = 1000kg)

As the surface area of the filter should preferably be at least 30% of the surface area of the pond, a filter with a minimum surface area of 4.8 square metre is prefered. (This translate to a size of 1.6m width and 3m length.

Hi Dave,

4x12x2 will work out to be 96 tons and a surface area of 48 square metre.

The minimum filter size should therefore be 14.4 square metre. To achieve this, run your filter with a "L" shape running along one long and one short edge of the pond (1 metre width)

With this filter, the surface area will then be 13m x 1m + 4m x 1m = 17 square metre which is equavalent to 35.4% of pond surface area. Place timber planks on top of the filter to serve as walkway.

Dear Mr Khoo

Thankyou once again for your suggestion on the bigger filter.But i don't seemed to be able to understand how the "L" shape filter works.Does it mean two indepedence filter?How many waste outlet needed in the pond?How many section inside the filter?
Please help me to understand the queries mentioned above.

Hello David !

I,need more info. on your Pond.
Loc./Size/ Sunshine % or hr. per Day.
As you have asked first for 4x4x2 and
now 4x12x2.
A,Pond of 4x12x2 will be very Expensive
to Build, approx. 60-80,000. if you Build
a Overall system to LAST.
This size is not a Pond for Beginners,as the Monthly running cost is about 1500-2000.
THE CHEAPEST WAY TO BUILD A KOI POND IS TO BUILD IT ONCE,BUT BUILD IT "PROPERLY"

Deart Mr Hans,
Thankyou for your concern,my pond right now is 4x4x1.As it is to shallow,so,the first idea was to increase the dept.So i ask for smaller pond filter.
The bigger pond is to extend from the existing pond to further beatify the landscape.The contractor quoted me $40,000.00 inclusive of filter ie the lots.
I was in KL yesterday,i visited one koi shop in Cheras where the owner build a semi on-ground pond inside the Shophouse.Do you have any opinion on that?
Refering to the running cost,do you mean the electricity bill incurred or there is other hidden cost that i am aware of.

Hi Dave,

I believe what Hans Ham mentioned on the running cost of big ponds are as follow :-

(1) Electrical bill as you really need a lot of water pump and air compressors.

(2) water bill which can be substantial as you will have to change about 10% of the water everyday.

(3) Maintence cost on pumps and air compressor equipment which will break down after some use.

(4) Do not forget that with bigger pond water volume, any chemical you wish to add to improve water quality will also increase tremendously.

Hi, David

How is the pond going on?? I heard from a friend that you have already comfirm the people to rebuilt your pond, maybe I'm busy body, but I have a suggestion that maybe you should keep your existing pond depth and joint the new one deeper. You can keep the old one as your feeding area. And you should joint the koi club if you have not, 'cause every month there is some one there going to japan to get the stock which supply almost the whole Malaysia, including the dealer where you bought your fish from in Miri. Few of my friends' pond had been service by the local aquarium here to the point where all the fish died.

It is nice to hear from someone in the same kampung.Any how,the purpose of this exercise is to build a "foolproof"pond,i am very thankfull to all the precious comment from all the member.Hopefully i can get it started in no time.
As for the fish sourcing,my buyer is attending a koi show in Nigata,Japan this week,i ordered some kuhako/tancho/asagi to stock up my pond.You're feel free to drop by sometime to view the new stock by next week.

as i can see you changed the size again.

Sorry for the inconvinence,the reason is because the contractor did not give me the actual size until today.I will fax your the net size of the pond.As the sunlight,it only shine from 12pm -5pm in the alfternoon.There is also covered "netting shade" above the pond.

Hello Dave

The uniring is a porous black hose which is coiled to form a ring and is connected to air pipe (from HI Blow). The minute holes in the black hose produce a lot a air bubble when the HI Blow is turned on.

Take note that the uniring is place at a small distance from the base of the pond. The bubbling effect cause a water current to move from the centre of the uniring towards the top of the pond. With the Air pump action, all the heavy fish waste that falls to the bottom of the pond will be dragged to the bottom drain (centre of uniring) via this small gap and being discharged. The discharge is assisted by air bubbling along the stand pipe.

This is what Hans means by Forced Removal of Dirt
