Algae has increased Can't Post

Last year I had virtually no plankton algae in my 5000 litre pond with 20 large to small fish. This year after treating the pond with Bacteriacide (fungus and fin rot treatment supplied by Kockney Koi, Yamitsu) there has been a large increase in algael growth. Is there any reason to think that this could be the cause or is it just coincidence. I have carried out other tests and everything seems OK apart from the pH is about 8.5. I refill the pond with tap water that has been stood for over a week (is this long enough) and I have a Bioforce 9000 filter with a suitable pump plus a makeshift bio filter with 40, 16 inch by 4 inch pipe cleaner brushes in. Basically no factors have changed other than the treatment and possibly slightly better weather this year.

Any comments would be well recieved.

No it's not a coincedence that a Bacteriacide would have helped cause the Algae Bloom.

Your Pond and specifically your Filtration System develops what's called Aerobic Bacteria, which helps process and clean your water. By using this chemical and NOT by-passing your filtration system, the chemical has killed off most (if not all) of this beneficial bacteria.

I just had the same thing happen when I treated my pond with Potassium Permanganate. I forgot to bypass my filtration system and within a couple of days I had Green Water. It will take 2-4 weeks for this bacteria to accumulate again in the filtration system. In the meantime, don't be surprised to see your ponds water turn Pea-Soup Green where you can't see anything.

However, this isn't really bad for the fish. In fact is has some benefits. The bad part is that you can't monitor your fish closely enough to determine if they're having any problems.

You can somewhat speed up the process of this re-generation of Aerobic bacteria by aerating your pond more and specifically your filters.

Some people advocate the use of UV lights to eliminate Algae and it does work. You will often read in these posts about them. However if you do use one, turn it off once the algae has been eliminated, because it also kills Aerobic Bacteria.

Thanks for that BranMuffin.

So, what your saying is treat the pond earlier or later in the year when algae growth is less vigorous filtration is less essential?

No, what I'm saying is to By-Pass your filtration system when treating the pond unless of course you are having a major epidemic. Most chemicals that you use to medicate fish with will only last a few days. At that time you can run the pond water through the filter again.

Which brings up the point that a) It's better to treat fish in a separate medicating tank. b) If you're going to by-pass the filter system, you will need to keep it aerated to keep the Aerobic bacteria alive.

When your fish gets sick you don't have an option on when to medicate them. They must be medicated right away. So obviously, you can't wait until the end of the year or when it's convenient for you. Unfortunately, it doesn't work that way.

could you not use one of these bacteria starter kits that you get ,i was afraid of the same thing after i treated my pond 1200 gall so i used the starter kit you follow the directions and either add to the filter or put in pond where water runs in from filter this is what i did and and my water has been fine .I was told this kicks your bio filter into gear again .hope this is of some use

fossy Cool

Bran Muffin,

I hope you don't mind me making a small correction, if of course I understand you correctly.

You say UV killes aerobic bacteria, I have heard this often, and not just here, this is a misconception. Nitrosomonas bacteria oxidize ammonia to nitrite; Nitrobacter bacteria oxidize the nitrite to nitrate. These bacteria are not free swimming, but require a substrate to grow on, and prefer the dark.

Just wanted to clarify that, hope you don’t mind.

I have a UV setup and I have lots of suspended algae particles in the water (27000 gallon "pond." Clear enough to see the bottom (8') but not crystal clear, maybe 60% clear. Think I should shut the UV off for a while...won't kill the algae but also won't kill the algae eating bacteria? Fish are doing fine and have at least 40 to 50 2" to 5" koi fry along with my 10 medium to large Koi. Never owned Koi before and this all came with my house that I just bought.
