Pond water is brown not green, HELP. Can't Post

We had a pond built last fall and have just a few small Koi in it... The man who built it lined the whole thing with river rock, the pond was built using one of the black rubber liners.... Now the water has gone from green to brown... I have tried every chemical known to man, my husband cleans the filters constantly which are also brown and I try vacuuming with one of those small vacuums... It is like trying to sink a battleshipe with a pea shooter.... Has anyone ever heard of lining a pond like this with river rock and would this be the cause of the problem?? Please help and thanks...Betsy

Hi Betsy,

I cant help you with your brown water, as we have been experiencing the same problem. Not many answers to this problem on here as you can see my posting has had many hits and 0 answers. I did want to to let you know not to let it go on too long as we have some large koi and over the weekend we lost one 15 incher and have a 20 incher not doing too well. We ended up putting the fish in a large pool and cleaning and replacing all the water in the pond. So far so good all the other fish are doing well. (for history of pond check my posting if your interested :) Anyway what we have done is introduce some of the media from our friends filter into ours as a jumpstart and we are running an extra pump in the pond periodically to be sure there is enough oxygen we shall see. Sorry I am not much help let me know if you find something that works and I will share my efforts with you . Good Luck T

Hello and thanks for replying to my call for help.. I did get a few emails from people that seemed to know what they were talking about... Well our whole pond is lined with river rock and it was unanimous for us to take everyone of them out of there... Seems like sediment and everything settles in between the cracks of the rocks and that adds to the brown water.. Also we did go and buy a UV filter and I can tell you that water has already started to clear and clean itself, it was well worth the investment. We gave watched the waterfall area actually go from brown to green to absolutely clear, nothing on the box at all now..... We are going to remove all of the stones when it gets warmer....I wish I could be of more help to you but I can say a UV filter is worth it..... Betsy

Betsy & Teedee, Very sorry to both of u. Its unusual not to have any ppl to assist u here. it cud be due the the 2 days mid-week public holiday over here. I hope u don't give up yet. These helpful ppl may be still busy catching up what they have left behind before the holidays. I hope you understand that the forum members here are hobbyist just like you & me. Nobody in this forum are full-timer or employed as mediator. We merely sharing & learning from each others' experiences.

While u are waiting for some suggestions, cud u furnish a few more details such as your pond & filter size, type of filter media use etc. may help to revitalize your question.

All the best to both of you

Cheers

Betsy, Your pond is considered quite new & is experiencing the first summer. I believe you are not living in the tropical region. The reason I ask is becoz almost all new ponds it the tropical region turned green after 2 to 6 weeks of operation (unless otherwise UV clarifier or chemical is used). The pond will stay green until the bio filter kicks in (when the bio filter has enough bacteria to perform the nitrogen cycle)

I would suggest you beef up your bio filter by adding more bio media like jap mat into your filter chambers. With your UV in placed you will not be able to gauge the performance of your bio filter unless various test kits are used. This green water thing is a good indicator to shown your bio filter efficiency.

Just for you to ponder, keeping the green water all the year round is more difficult than to get rid of them. actually the catfish farmers in the states has to be educated to keep their pond water green & to culture algae to feed their fish to maintain their operational cost down. In the other hand as koi keeper, we are worried that this green stuff does not go away. Again, why keep koi at home if we can't see them. lol.

Cheers
