Ranking System Can't Post

We are currently revising the ranking system and we will likely to change the ranking to a series of simple titles and at the same time we are removing the title of koi expert from the system. The present system that depend on the number of posts made do encourage some members to post substantial number of the post within a short period hopefully to gain a higher title soon along the way.

We have seen that one user post a great number of one post such as

Quote

your koi are really nice

This type of one line post should be avoided in the future. This site is very informative because a great number of koi lovers and senior members are willing to contribute and share their experience with new users.

If the forum continue to be flooded by useless one line post, then it will be more difficult in the future for users to search for information.

if there is no replacement yet, can we disable it for the moment?
i am having trouble keeping up with the number of new threads and new posts
and thats considering i have a fast internet connection, what about the people who use dialups.
they will be clicking on every page (i do) only to see such comments.

thanks

Re: [Khoobg] Ranking System [In reply to] Can't Post

why dont you redoo program the ranking like this,

embryo= new member

fry= koi lover

fingerling= koi kichi and koi enthusiast

young koi= koi addict

mature koi= old hand

champion koi= koicom power user

make everything harder to achieve, so 2 posts have the worth of 1. so if i have 600 post it will only be worth 300, but i still will have 600 post. get it.

that would defeat the purpose of redoing the system. the ranking should have nothing to do with the number of posts.

kkaku2, the reason the admin/moderator is deciding to redo the system is because of the large volume of worthless posts from people trying to up their number of posts to get to the next level.

so the goal would be : "if u dont have something constructive to say ... dont"

Eric,

Quantiy is not important but quality. You should control yourself from posting unnecessary in most thread unless you have solid point to say. It is also not a competition as you have said. To be straight, the announcement was made just because of you and I must say sorry to be that straight forward or else I d not think you are going to take my hint by the annoucement that I made.

Re: [Khoobg] Ranking System [In reply to] Can't Post

I was never a supporter of the ranking system anyway. Like you said, lots of people reply in as many threads as they can just to move up in ranking. I got to the point where I really didn't pay attention to the rankings, because it doesn't take long to figure out who really knows their stuff.

There are people here with very few post who I feel are very knowledgeable and have gained my respect.

Re: the one line response. I am guilty of such at times, especially when all I want to do is to agree with someones opinion. There's no sense in repeating what they had already said. But I will stop if that's the preferred method. I certainly hope that people don't think that I'm just trying to up my status! I'm just here to try to contribute some of my limited knowledge, but as you know, this hobby is a continual learning experience.

Best Regards
Bran

I do not know how complicated this may be for the system, but heres an idea. Is it possible to be able to rank somebodys post if it is felt it is worthwhile? If someone offers some very good advice which works, they deserve credit for it. There would be no use in offering short posts just to gain rank, they could be used for legitimate compliments etc.

thats actually a good idea.

but as i was typing the above sentence, i have thought of a loophole that will give us more problems ...
people registering multiple times (different identities) to vote for themselves

alright, we're still gonna use his idea ... but how's this for an anti-loophole :

new members cannot vote yet. (i dont know how long, or how many posts)
a member's voters should be reviewed by khoob if there is a chance of a "fake"

First call me dim but I did not realise that rankings were linked to posts (Dohh) I think I had a Homer Simpson moment. The point is Why do we need rankings ? I love to read all the stuff I can because I love the hobby and if I can help someone else out with a problem that I have solved I will. So why are we obsessed with rank we should all be "Koi Slaves". Andy

hmmm, we should all be called one thing, i think the reason why i was so obsessed about the ranking system was becasue, i wanted to fight for respect. now i dont care.

we all should be called the same thing, and NO More top posting display.

this ranking system is like

1st class citizen
2nd class citizen
3rd class citizen

and so on. I think we need to get past that bologney.

I believe we dont need the ranking system anymore.

do away with it.

Re: [Khoobg] Ranking System [In reply to] Can't Post

Hi All

I am a new user here in these forums, hopefully I may be able to offer a new perspective?

I have been a member of great number of forums covering a many different subjects over the last 10 -12 years, I have also been the Moderator for a considerable number!

Personally I have found that the only grading system that worked was when applied by a selected team of observers, this type of grading can be beneficial as it gives New/Novice users an indication of the validity of the advice offered!

However in ungraded forum’s I have found that if a person’s input is unsound/unsafe then it is usually followed very quickly by a number of other more experienced people, warning of this unsound/unsafe input!

Unfortunately certain areas of this forum require often immediate accurate advice, especially where the life’s of living creatures is at stake and then if inaccurate information is given before corrections can be given, somebody’s prize friend may be lost!

You Have already instigated one means of warning, with the automatic attachment to one poster of a warning, this could be expanded to an attachment that also indicates a lack of validity of advice not just on numbers, I realise this would rely on feedback from your base of users, you would have to look at the validity and viability of this!

I sincerely hope this is of assistance!

Regards,
Graham Walker

Mr. Graham. I fully support you.

We must understand that some members give their advice purely based on their experience whereas some excellent advice are based on Book wriiten by expert. We must also understand that Not all members here are Koi Keeper, some are actually business keeper. The way they advise and the link they refer to sometimes really raise people's eyebrows. One would question whether they are advertising or advising?
Coercing or giving honest comment? hypocrite or genttlement?

Unfortunately, the receiver would always be too naive to believe. Worst, some take in only positve comment instead of negatrive. Really committing suicide.

What to do? This is life. The better liars would always win.

Hi Tan Lee King

Your Knowledge of English is excellent, the only thing that gives you away that English is not native to you is on the occasional syntax (word order) error, I am English and have German as a second vocabulary but I envy anyone that can have English as a second (or more) ! vocabulary there is non harder to learn!

Suicide is an exit for cowards!!! people really must read, what is written, then understand what they have read, then applie common logic to the problem, “does the advice sound logical, or is there a bias” once the decision on weather it is factual, the decision must be made as to accuracy of fact! Twist and turns can often be seen if you read something several times, then ask does this sound as if it will work 100% or are there if’s & but’s if there are think again, if possible wait for further advice (I know this can be devastating if fish are dying, but you will save more by sometimes waiting than by following doubtful advice!

Graham

Re: [Khoobg] Ranking System [In reply to] Can't Post

Hi Khoo,
I realize this is an old issue and a major source of the problem appears to have vacated the premesis, but is there still some consideration of altering the system? I was not a member at the time it came up and had no idea what the methodology was until recently, but perhaps some of the considerations mentioned here already could be incorporated.
Realizing that you have other duties and responsibilities, (real job, home, family... a lifeWink), perhaps a small number of members whom you have grown to respect for their depth of knowlwdge, experience, maturity, and value of their posts, would be willing to get together online with you from time to time (monthly, quarterly) to review and reccommend members for elevation or reduction in status, with the final decision remaining with you.
When I first came to the forum I immediately gravitated toward those members who had an obviously strong track record and technical knowledge of koi and water quality, but I am analytical by nature so research is part of my makeup. Other new members may not take that approach and accept bad advice from someone who means well but lacks the wisdom to know when to shut up.
This could help to solve the problem of people running up numbers just to "move up the ladder" and at the same time add meaning and value to the titles as the members would know it means you have earned the respect of senior members. I know there are a number of members who don't post all that often, but when they do it is of such value that their true worth is not reflected by their "title".
Anyway, it's just my two cents worth on the subjectBlush.
Thanks again for the forum and all the help it has been to me.
Larry
