i have three 200 gallon ponds and two of them have fishes... and this rainy season got me off guard becouse i was in jail... so i came back last week and my sisters didn't tell me that half of my fish have died... the water was all muddy and dirty... i changed them to an inside aquarium, and i'm ready to put them back into the pond... but i don't know what to do incase it rains again... and i am also planning to build a 3,000 gallon koi pond in my back yard...

what should i do so it doesn't over flow with water. my other pond was covered but the thing was that it overflowed and dirt got washed in... and some fishes got washed out... i'm going to construct a roof thing on the big pond... but i don't know what else to do... i know it's not going to be enough...

any ideas...? thanks in advance....

this is for your new pond, right?

1st of all: you need to install an overflow pipe at the water level you want (one that goes directly to the drains)

2nd: you need to put some sort of collar around the pond, so that dirty flood water doesnt come in and pond water doesnt come out.

i kind of knew about making it with a rim around it... but a drain pipe... hmm...

i'm going to make two bottom drains and try to use to hi pressure filters with two pumps... what if i just make a pipe go thru the top lip of the pond and straight out... that way the water will flow thru the small pipe and out of the pond... but i would have to make a hole in the liner, and fishes & debree might get stuck in it...

maybe if i put like two or three small pipes... do you think it would work...???

The way to construct an overflow is to bring the actual pipe in lower than the intended level, with a slight fall on the pipe. Join this to an elbow and fit pipe into the elbow to come to more or less the surface level.

Fill the pond, and then trim the pipe so that it is level with the finished water level. The pipe should be say 4 inches, or thereabouts. Fish are not likely to get caught on this pipe as the miniscus of water running over the overflow will be very small indeed. In addition given the larger diameter the flow velocity is not so great a fish could not escape.

it may work, as long as the water from the outside doesnt use that same pipe to get in

i will make it slope down alot... i'm going to go ahead and do it... i'll post pics and details when i'm done and have it running....
