Another DIY Drum filter... Can't Post

Hi all,

I made 2 drum filters for a young friend of ours....Forever MangoSmile The filters are 1st settlement with static combo and 2nd is a moving bed using BCN007 media(963m2 surface area and cheaper). I used 100mm(4") transfer pipe for better flowWink

First, I needed 3 x 4" bulkhead fittings or uniseals...very expensiveShocked So I had to make something cheaper that can do the jobTongue I bought 3 x 100mm floor flange(the one they use for floor inlet like showers) These will be for inlets and outlets and will be installed out side the drums

I cut the 100mm hole and test fit a pipe to make sure it was large enoughWink I heated up the flange with a heat gun on both sides only(wear protective gloves) and when it was soft enough I pushed it against the drum wall so it will follow its curve and waited for it to cool down then dip to cold water. I used 316 stainless steel nut/bolts/washers then screw the flange to the drum making sure that the flange opening is aligned with the hole(see pic). I removed the screws, clean the burs and roughen the drum and the flange. I applied loads of silicon on both and replace back the screws.
NOTE: When tightening the screws do it crisscross and slowly(not going around). This will make the silicon to disperse evenly on bothSmile

Pipe test fit

Flange fixed on the drum with silicon.

Here you can see the inlet/outlet of the moving bed. I cut a small leght of 100mm pipe and used pipe solvent to secure it to the flange. Make sure you have enough lenght on either side of the flange so you can add more pipe/fittings using either a 100mm coupler(for the inside) and 100mm rubber connector(for the outside).

Here is the moving bed unit complete with inlet and outlet

And the inside. The pipe on the floor is the 50mm drain. I've done it this way coz the the floor is not flat as you can see. Also since the waste will settle on the lowest part and will go around eventually goes out to the drain when flush. The pipe in the middle is the inlet and top one is outlet. Mesh will be added to prevent the media scapping. A mesh with airline diffuser will be placed just below the inlet is.

Here is a DIY connector for the slide valve. I used head gun to make thisWink

Here is the settlement. This drum has a flat bottom so the drain will work much better which will suit the application. An elbow will be added in the inlet pipe to have the vortex effectCool

Here you can see the rubber connector has been used to connect the 2 drums. This will give you flexsibility if they ever move.Wink It come with SS clamps and that's all you use, no glue.

Here is the mesh(bread tray) for the moving bed and airline diffuser secured. You'll notice the a smaller mesh, this will prevent the media getting flushedSmile

The protective mesh is added in the moving bed drum, sat on a few bricks.

Now this shows the static container added in the settlment drum. All I did was added an 45deg elbow and a lenght of 100mm pipe drilled with lots of 8mm holes. The small bucket will contain the static media. Water will enter from the bottom of the bucket then to the middle pipe then to goes to moving bed. THe bottom of the bucket will have an airline diffuser which is permanently off. Will only turn on for cleaning.

Here you can see that Mango has added the media in the static chamber. A collar will be made to support the bucket preventing it from tiltingSmile

And here is the moving bed. The media is boiling really wellCool

Credit to Mango coz I just told him what to do and built the filters but he actually put it together. Great job mateSmileWink

Jon,
Excellent piece of info!!Sly You must have search high and low in the house / storesto look for everything that you can make use of. Laugh

Question:
1. The "floor flange or floor inlets for showers" - I dont get it, can you take a picture of where it actually used? so I can search for it locally.
2. When you fit the floor flange to the drum, do you think using DIY gasket is more effective compare to silicon when fixing 4" pipe?
3. If DIY gasket is to be fitted, should the inside of the drum be fitted with another sort of floor flange just to put the inside and outside together?
4. The 4" rubber connector with SS - is that an air-con duct?
5. The inverted bottom drain - I like your inverted idea. Very good!! what is the height of the hole which the bottom drain is fixed?

More questions to come but later before I get more ?? in my headSlySly

You have no idea how my brain hurtsTongueLaugh

Question:
1. The "floor flange or floor inlets for showers" - I dont get it, can you take a picture of where it actually used? so I can search for it locally.

I wish I canPirate They normally use this fittings in showers/toilets while they building a houseShockedTongue The flange is actually to fit 100mm pipe's outside diameter. So the flange slips to the pipe(like a collar) Hope this helps.

2. When you fit the floor flange to the drum, do you think using DIY gasket is more effective compare to silicon when fixing 4" pipe?
Well the reason I used silicon is coz of the uneven surface of the drum and the flange itself. Also with SS screws it shouldn't move at all. A gasket will be fine so long as there's a good contact on both surfaceSmile

3. If DIY gasket is to be fitted, should the inside of the drum be fitted with another sort of floor flange just to put the inside and outside together?
That was one on the reasons why I've done it this way to reduce cost and timeTongue Also if you want to to add another flange inside it means you have to flex it according to internal curve and it's going to be a bit tricky but I can't say why notWink
4. The 4" rubber connector with SS - is that an air-con duct?
No. They normally use this to fix a broken pipes and comes in different sizes(40mm to 100mm I think)

5. The inverted bottom drain - I like your inverted idea. Very good!! what is the height of the hole which the bottom drain is fixed?
The idea is if you can't have a bottom from the underside of the drum this will work the same way which will save you from digging. From memory all I think its about 100mm off the floor of the drum.

More questions to come but later before I get more ?? in my head
Sure mate and I'll get back to you what ever I got in my headTongueSly

Jon
