Best use of Single 40gal Drum? Can't Post

A fellow I work with gave me a heavy duty plastic drum 40 gal.

I have only one of them and after getting the pond all up and going the wife is not to excited about going out and buying another one to have a setelment tank and a bio filter.

I have about a 900 gal pond with a 1300 gph pump and a presurized filter, rated for 1600 gal pond as my curent set up. I know that a larger Bio filter would not hurt.

I am thinking of atempting to make the bottom 1/3 of the barrel a settelment section and the top 2/3 a Bio filter filled with Lava rock and have an outlet for water at the top that pours down into my waterfall.

Like the filter in this thread.

The only thing I am try'n to figure out is how to suspend the Lava rock so that the bottom part of the barrel can be allowed to settle.

The barrle at it's 19 inches around x abou 28 inches high
I know it's not all that big but I figure it was free and more bio filter can't be all bad.

I could just leave the settlement part of it out and make it strictly a bio barrel.

Sorry about all the mesurements being in American but i'm sure i would mess them up if I tried to convert them.
Just looking for ideas on best use for a single barrel.

You can use some 4" pipes(x4) as support and eggcrate duffuser to hold your lava rock.

Why don't you use K1 media instead, don't get me wrong lava rock is cheap and great for TT application but as a submerge filter it will be a pain in the butt to clean it. With K1 as moving bed it will provide you lots of surface area for the beneficial bacteria to colonise and its a lot easier to cleanCool Think about it.

rgds,
Jon

Got to agree with Jon. As much as I like Lava Rock as biomedia, in the type of application you're contemplating K1 is the way to go. You would HATE yourselft for using LR the first time you had to try and clean it upMad. K1 moving bed media not only gives you a good surface area for biobacters, it self cleans for the most part.
