Bio-Filter??? Can't Post

I just have a normal water pump attached to a box with a piece of cloth that doesn't allow dirt to get back into the pond. I clean it about once a month.

What is all this talk about letting the filter mature and all that?

Please fill me in with all the info.Unsure

Hi Aragorn,

Blessed are the ignorant, for they do not know, and thus they have no fear (read that as not being paranoidShockedMad!)

before i knew about "bio" filters, i must have killed thousands of fish (literally! koi and other tropical fish)

i tried to make do with overhead filters ... even increasing the size of overhead filters to match my pond's size.

the best thing that happened for my fish hobby (specifically koi) is that someone gave me a koi book.

post a pic of your filter so i can see what it is, and get a pic of it inside the filter, i have a tetra pf1, it says it works for ponds up to 500 gallons,i have a 250 gallon pond, is it not a good filter. i dont know what the benefical bacteria looks like. so if you can get a pic of some i would be grateful.

you cant see the beneficial bacteria. i use the laguna powerflo max and laguna powerflo 4500 on my 180 gallon pond. the powerflo 4500 is rated for 1000 gallons.

i built my own filter for my new pond. but its still not operational.

so a bio filter can get rid of unicelluar algae if its good enough.

a new thing came out thats called an algae magnet, the magnet alters the microscopic plants iron alignment, and mess's up the reproductive cyle, like making them sterile

Re: [khaku2] Bio-Filter??? [In reply to] Can't Post

Ok initially I wrote a nicer post but I've read up a bit on this and algae magnets are a load of bull.

Algae reproduce asexually, their chromosomes duplicate themselves and then they split, forming 2 identical bodies. Clones. This is done through their DNA. Algae to not produce sperm nor do they enjoy a bit of raunchiness with mrs unicell's promiscuous daughter. The only way you can stop algae reproducing is to kill them or mutate their DNA. This cannot be done with a magnet. You cannot make them sterile.

Please don't be taken in by these magnetic therapy scams, they are just a nice way for people to make money. If you really feel you must have some of this crackpot technology, get a big magnet that has a plastic coat so it wont rust up your pond and attatch it to one of your water pipes. I only pity you if you pay $20 for an "algae magnet"

Updated...

HAHAHAHAHAHA..... oh my that made me laugh. Well i went and had a look for some algae magnets, and shame on anyone who actually falls for it. an algae magnet from http://www.aquariumcleaner.com/products.html will cost you between $50 and $150 dollars. This is a magnet we are talking about here people. My lord, I almost wish I'd thought up that scam

khaku2,
they make bio-filters that contain a UV filter inside the unit. Fairly inexpensive if you have a small pond. Hope that helps.
