Bio filter Can't Post

Dear All,
I am a fresh in Koi pond owner in Hong Kong.
My pond have a filter with 3 layer.
And I know from the forum that bacteria in Bio filter can solve the green water problem.
Is that I can put the bacteria in a of the layer in the filter?
How to do it?

Thanks a lot

Whilst bottled bacteria are a good form of kickstarting the beneficial bacteria colony in your biofilter, you should over time have them start to grow over time. Apparently the beneficial bacteria are very slow growers, and this is one reason why some people recommend the addition of new koi very slowly, if you add too much koi when the biofilter is still new, you can suddenly find yourself with the green water problem.

Look at the very first home page of this Koi website www.koi.com.my towards the left hand side menu under 'hot topics', after you get into that page, go down and find a topic covering 'green water', I think it was titled 'Why do I have green water?'

Green water consists of microscopic floating organic life form and are often even smaller than any filter matting/media. They rely on the abundance of nutrients a pond with too many fish and inadequate biofilter can supply, once the biofilter (if it is the right size for the pond) is colonised sufficiently to meet the load of the pond and its inhabitants, you should find the green water slowly dissappearing. Other tips I could offer include, cleaning only the first matting in your filter, as you'll need the other matting uncleaned to allow these to be colonised with the benenficial bacteria.

I supposed you have searched under the forums "pond water quality"? There have been a few current posts (including one by me) concerning green water and what was/has been done to combat the green water.

By the way, how large is your pond? and how large is your biofilter and pump capacity? These will help the Koi Maniacs around here to assist you further.

Re: [Jonas] Bio filter [In reply to] Can't Post

That so great that have reply so fast.

Many thanks for all your help.

Actually, the volume of my pond is around 3 cubic meter.
I don't know exactly what is the flow rate of the pump. I only know the power is 150W...

My filter have 3 layer. So where should I place the bacteria on it?? and what media need.

From what you've said 3 cubic meters should equate to to around 3000 litres of water.

I could never figure out your pump's output simply from wattage, perhaps a name/brand/model of the unit in question would help considerably.

The bacteria should be placed according to instructions on the bottle itself, or from the experiences of others on the forum. I have no experience in using bottled bacteria, simply waiting for nature to take its course in my pond, allowing nature to bring me the beneficial bacteria instead of me introducing it into the biofilter. Usually, many have recommended spreading the bottled bacteria onto the media used for the biofilter.

Popular forms of biomedia include japanese matting, bioballs, matala matting. Prefilters (the stage before the biomedia stage) removes heavy solids, debris liek leaves etc, with individuals using brushes, or me I used polyester batting (which needs a bit more cleaning, but polishes the water of heavy debris before the biomedia stage leaving the biomedia clean of heavy debris.

Keep on reading and researching, be patient, it might take a while, but you become really aware of Koi keeping in the long run.
