Converting DE Swim Pool filter to Pond Filter
|
Can't Post

It's time!!! Have been using an old gutted cartriage filter with layers of Bird netting and K1 and a 2nd stage, DE filter (with Bio-balls) as a filtering process... Works fine... But, would like to enlarge the filtering capacity. Intend to use an old Swimming Pool, DE filter with backwash control (great on the Bio-ball filter). For those not into DE filters and would like to help/comments/suggestions with this project, I have included a pic of how a DE filter works... In short, the pond water enters the filter, passes through a nylon(?) mesh covered grids and then returned to the pond. For a swimming pool, the mesh is covered with a very fine bone (Diatomacceous Earth, DE) product which is back washed out periodically as the pressure increases due to dirt accumulation in the filter. DE is said to be too fine for pond filtering...I see the following as posibilities and look forward to your suggestion for improvement ... 1. Just use the filter as is with no DE... let the dirt accumulate in the grid mesh, then when pressure goes up... back wash, 2. Place K1 inside the grids ...that is, insert inbetween the nylon mesh, 3. Remove some of the grids... and fill with 'pea rocks (1/4 inchs), 4. Remove ALL of the grids,.. fill with several graduated rocks in levels 5. Leave grids in and fill with bird netting, Any suggestions, comments more than welcome ... I would like to obtain more filtering and I really like the idea of backwashing to clean the filters...but I am concerned that a few of the above ideas will prohibit filter backwashing and therefore not cleaning the filter properly... Thanks for your help, Jimar1
