DIY Micro Strainer... Can't Post

Hi Guys/Gals,

After a long researched, I finally decided to make a micro strainer. Got this idea in another koi forumWink.

Size is 26cm in diameter and 30cm in height. This will go in my settlement hoping it will reduce my maintenace a lot moreWink
Purpose of this strainer is to stop the micron waste going into prefilter. If this thing works, I will convert my prefilter to another bio unitSmile

This unit will suit if you have a blue drum filter or even a square chamber. The unit will rotate by vortex effect and also with the aid of the backwash systemWink So its a self cleaning unitCool

Materials for strainer:
1 x 8L bucket with a snap on lid, 1 x S/S 280 micron screen, silicon, expandable foam and a piece of 10cm pipe as sleve.

Materilas for Backwash unit: (Will get later on)
20mm pipe, some elbows and a tee and a 3000Lph pump.

Here you can see the rim of the bucket is being cut by a hack saw. This will be the top part of the unit. You'll see what I mean later onWink I cut the actual lip off the bucket, this will be used later on tooSmile

This is the lid and will be used as the base. You can see the marked of 10cm pipe. This is the right side upSmile

Re: [Koi38] DIY Micro Strainer... [In reply to] Can't Post

Con't...

The lip that was trimmed before will be used to hold the stainless steel screen on the base. It's like closing the bucket with the lid. You just place the screen on the lid and push in the lip, instead of sticking it with a glue. You can undo the lip if you need to adjust the unit if its too highCool I thought I took a pic before I put them together but I didn'tPirate Anyway, here's how this unit look like. I still have to glue them.

This shot is upside down showing the 10cm sleeve getting fix on the bottom of the unit. The sleeve was heated up to expand a little to create clearance in the stand pipe. The actual size of the sleeve is 11cm in diameter.

This is the right side upSmile This is almost done. All I need now is to work on the backwash unitUnsure

Con't...

Here you can see the expandable foam was applied. I have to wait for 24hrs before I can trim it. Puorpose of this foam is to make the unit floats and will follow the water levelSmile

I will post more pics tomorrow when I trim the foam. Will try this in my settlement see if I have to adjust anything.

Jon

Hi Jon,
I like this project. Question is where to get the microscreen? I actually had a link to a website from this forum long ago about microscreen. The only problem is that I cannot get hold of microscreen n thus I do the fine particle filtration in a vortex by puting jap mat near the water outlet in my vortex n it works wonders. But need to clean the jap mat every weekFrownFrownFrown. I hope to put microscreen in my vortex once I can get hold of the microscreen.

Sifu Kit,

I'm still working on the backwash system which will clean the screen, so no maintenance reallyCool. The backwash system has to work properly though or else the screen will get clog so easyPirate

Anyway, I trimmed the foam this morning with a hack saw.

It should look like this. I applied a thin layer of silicon on the foam to protect from deterioratingCool

I did a test today and its a bit too high. That means I have to pull it apart and trim the screen. At least I'll get a chance to show the lip of the drum and how it will hold the bottom part of the unit.

Thats the advantge of not gluing the bottom part(lip and lid), if you have to trim the screen, you can always pull it apart. Once you're happy then you can glue it permanently . Just like what happened to meTongueSmile

Here is the bucket lip.

The lip will be pushed in the lid

Its time to put it back togethert againUnsure First, turn the lid upsidedown then slide in the screen where the lip will sit in. I will be using a screw driver to push the lip inside the bucket lid. See pic belowSmile

Screen test run again, this time its very good. Floats better and rotates fasterCoolCoolCool

I am now toying with backwash system. This is my first idea but you'll need a good pump to make this workCrazy
By getting the right pressure coming out of the slits, technically this screen is maintenace freeAngelic The water spraying the screen outwards pushing the waste to the side of the settlement and should drop to the bottom for easy flashing.Smile Well that's the idea, until then I have to toy aroundTongue

Note: Placing the spray pipes in an angle will
help rotates the screen if you don't have a vortex effect in your settlement. You will need at least 2 spray pipes for this to workSmile

Jon

Hi All,

Here is my backwash system in test modeWink. You'll notice that one pipe has 4 slits and the other has 3 slits. I had same slits originally but they it will not clean the screen properlyUnsure so I staggered them like this _-_-_-_ this way with right pressure it should clean the screen wellSmile. The water in this bucket was actually rotating, pic didn't do justiceCrazy I even had to put a rope on pipe to stop it from rotating. I will try to fit this tomorrow if I can and let you all know the resultsWink

Jon

Dear Jon
I think ur back wash the pump is too strong
Try cut the slits straight down, narrower and use the slower flow pump. Also nearer to the screen
Take a look at this web site

I thought about the pump but thats what I got atm and plus the stronger the pressure the better, but I might get a smaller pump laterWink Btw that's where I got my plan from that linkSmile

Hi All,

Just incase you want to see the screen at work, here a small videoCool

If you look closely on the top right corner of the vid you'll see crap get pushed to the side of the chamber and eventually drop to the bottom. Also I just focused on the pump to show where it isLaugh

Its been running since this morning and so far it hasn't clog yetCool

Hi Jon,
Sorry for my stupid questionUnsureUnsure...I started to confuse when I saw the final product that has the pump inside the micro stainer, it means you are using the inlet for backwash/drain also, originally I thought the water inlet is from the pump, the 10 cm PVC pipe in the middle is just for backwash. With the case that you have the pump spraying from inside the stainer, there is a possibility that you are pushing the debris out of the micro stainer, will it be better if you have the pump outside the stainer, and at the sametime you move the spraying pipe to outside also, they are spraying from outside to inside, exactly the same concept but spraying the fish waste back into the pvc pipe?

Cheers,
Edo

Water comes directly from my BD gravity feed to this settlement chamber. The 10cm pipe is a tranfer pipe that goes to the next chamber. So the water comes from the outside of the screen, 280 micron waste or larger get trap by the screen. The screen rotates at 8.7rpm with the aid of the spraybars, these push the crap to the side of the settlement and drops to the floor for flushing. The pump inside the screen is for backwash purpose only, nothing else.

Jon

Hi

Most Impressed 10/10 you have a homemade Answer. I have a real answer in a nexus and every 6 months or so you have to clean the screen with Caustic Soda as Bio film clogs the holes and belive me the C Soda is the only thing that shifts it. So keep an eye on you water levels in a few months.
