DIY QT tank Can't Post

Hi All,

Just want to share my new QTWink. It's a gravity feed system using liner. It's 1.5mL x .8mW x 1mH, hold close to 1300L to the rim plus filter(200L) Cool

First of the filter. I'll be using some of my old jmatts from old pond, bits and pieces plumbing to minimise the cost Tongue

Filter inverted drain

Outlet from QT. The lid of the drum has been trimmed and will be secured just about this outlets and then Jmatts will go on topSmile

Filter drain using slide valve

QT frame shell build using treated pine

QT shell completed. I will be using 12mm steel rod to hold the timber together. Holes will be drilled from top to bottom, then hammer down the steel rods. Next pic will show you what I meant. Its time to move all these to siteShocked Frame by frame of courseTongue

Assembling the shell on site. This pic shows the rods have been hammered inside the timber for supportsCool You'll need a decent sledge hammer to drive the rods all the way down but do it slowly to avoid splitting the timber. Smile

Another agle showing the steel rods inside the timber. Timber 4 stack high. One more to go

Pic shows the last puzzle going down.

Liner underlay added. I had to do this very quick before my kids see their carpetLaugh You can see the water exit point on the right.

QT exit point. I used 50mm floor flange and a DIY collar to squash the liner together

Liner done and adding water. Took a while to tidy up the folds. You can see the water pick up point on the floor corner.

QT exit pipe to filter with slide valve.

QT done. Water will be cycled for a few days then will add kamikaze squad later. I'm using a temp pump to cycle the water until I get the real pump next week. Pump will be placed outside. I will add more pics laterSmile

I will draw a simple diagram to show how the water circulates and rotatesWink

All comments bad or good are welcome with a big hugTongueTongueTongue

rgds,
Jon

Re: [Koi38] DIY QT tank [In reply to] Can't Post

Hi Jon,

Many thanks for posting and sharing a very informative descriptions on your DIY QT set-up.
I would just like to add on the following points to the system:-

1) IMHO, a gravity fed gravity is only efficient when there is a bottom drain provided to collect the
koi's waste product. I think in your case, the mid-level outlet from the QT has been placed too high for
taking in the waste product. You may consider extending an ' elbow connector ' to be position at the base
of the QT for it to be more effective.

2)The returning water outlets from the drum filter pump should be placed at the opposite end of the QT's
outlet so that the incoming water besides providing current will also help to push the waste product towards
the QT's outlet.

3)Please also provide plenty of aeration becos' this will not only help to provide the fish with a supply of
oxygen when they are stressed, but it will also help to gas off the excessive waste products that maybe
produced by the ineffective digestive system from a stressed out fish.

4)Lastly, regular water changes is one of the most important elements of maintaining a successful
quarantine system.

Thank you.

Best Regards,
Thiam Hwa

Hi Thiam,

Thank you for your very honest opinoinSmile

1) IMHO, a gravity fed gravity is only efficient when there is a bottom drain provided to collect the
koi's waste product. I think in your case, the mid-level outlet from the QT has been placed too high for
taking in the waste product. You may consider extending an ' elbow connector ' to be position at the base

Actually the pic don't do justice coz I used camera phone. But if you look carefully there is an elbow there . This pic will should show you more.Wink

2)The returning water outlets from the drum filter pump should be placed at the opposite end of the QT's
outlet so that the incoming water besides providing current will also help to push the waste product towards
the QT's outlet.

I've done a test and it shows that having the return where I have now is more effective than if the return is on the end. This is due to the length(not long enough) and the depth(too deep by leanght) The water bounces off the other end wall then down then back(see pic)

3)Please also provide plenty of aeration becos' this will not only help to provide the fish with a supply of
oxygen when they are stressed, but it will also help to gas off the excessive waste products that maybe
produced by the ineffective digestive system from a stressed out fish.

Don't worry Thiam, you know I willWink but atm I will be using a small pump with venturi until the minister approve my loanUnsureTongue
4)Lastly, regular water changes is one of the most important elements of maintaining a successful
quarantine system.

If we don't do this might as well forget about the whole thingShockedWink

Jon

Hi Jon

Just seen the QT tank real cool....I may need something like this in the next year as the wife has started looking at houses so that would mean a move for my koi and abandon my lovley pond....sniff

BUT she said I can build a new one when she gets her BIGGER house so its going to be a technical marvel.
