DIY SIEVE filter Can't Post

Hi all,
I'm considering to start building a DIY sieve filter. This sieve would be used to serve a small raised pond in a terraced roof.
My idea is to built a small sieve unit of aprox. 60x30 cm footprint and 60 cm height using a laminated wood+fiberglass composite. I mean, building the whole estructure in laminated wood and fiberglassing it.
I would use a design similar to that of ultrasieve 2. After the sieve, a fiberglass tank of 100 cm diameter and 45 cm height with aerated kaldness K1 would do the biological filtration.
The pond is aprox. 2500 liters in size, and has got a bottom drain and a mid water outlet. Maximum depth is 45 cm.
It is so small that is meaningless to expend over 700 euro buying a brand new ultrasieve...
Anyone has already built a sieve? Any inputs will be most acknowledged! Wink

Hi Diego,

I've never seen any DIY sieve but I've seen a microstrainer which is similar to sieve. Just bear in mind the weight of the water. I'll check the structural of your balcony if I were you. You are talking about nearly 3Ton weightShocked

rgds,
Jon

Hi Jon, thanks for your input.
Yes, I was pretty worried about placing any kind of pond on a terraced roof. This is in fact located in the 5th floor, just over the flat were I live.
I went to talk to one of the architecs that planned the building. Just the one who is responsible of structures and structural strenght.
He told me that it is allright if the load is 350 Kg (Kilograms) per square meter.
(1 Kg equals 2.20462 pounds, 1 square meter equals 10.76391 square foot)
That is equivalent of a water depth of 35 cm or 13.77953 inches.
Moreover, he said that taking into account all the factors plus the safety margins, it would be possible to go up to 450 Kg/square meter. However, he recomended not topush the limits.
I was very surprised by the fact that he insisted that the actual size (area) of the pond doesn't matter, provided that the depth was limited to around 35 cm. I can't truly believe this yet, but he insisted that it would be allright and even the load would be mor evenly distributed.
I started in 2000 placing a foldable kiddies pool of 1600 liters plus filters, and later added another one of 1500 liters plus filters and yet another one of 600 liters plus fiter that I'm using as a quarantine/treatment tank ocassionally. No problem (yet).
I wish to have an architec friend of mind visiting the place, would like to change the pools for a larger (but not deeper) EPDM pool.
I'm going to post some pics, but since it is something different from the oiginal DIY sieve issue of this tread I'm posting the pics in a new tread.

Water is pumped into the sieve and fills up the smaller chamber then flows out over the grid , pushing the waste downwards towards the bottom of the 250 micron grill . There are two 3 inch outlets one above the sieve the other below , the water never blocks due to this design . Maintenance wise scoop the crap from the bottom of the grill and feed your plants , occassionally I take out the grill and jetwash .
