Bottom drains are used with gravity fed filtration systems. Basically this means that the filter unit (either bought or homemade concrete block filter) is built/placed with the intended water level equal both in the pond and in the filter system. An external pump is used to "suck" clean water from the last filter partion back into the pond. This in turn drags water through the filter, which has to be replaced via the bottom drain (as water will always equalise the level. Now, in your situations (bearing the above in mind), you will need to drain your existing pond and remove the liner. Then you will need to dig a small trench (about 6 inches deep and the same wide) from the centre to the filter site. The bottom drain itself has a sealing ring that screws onto the main body of the drain. The liner is placed back in position and the sealing ring is placed over the top, thereby sandwiching the liner between the two (also use silicon sealer around the ring) , and screw back into place. I hope this is a clear description ?
