Re: [chriswu3311] Diy Protein Skimmer... [In reply to] Can't Post

i'm from KL. I just called my regular fish shop, apparently they have many types, the one that i used apparently was made in China but supposedly the better lot than the China made. I have been using for the past 1 year and its still working.

He will let me know the brand as he cant remember off hand. Prices for 30W about RM150, 20W is about RM130. The length for 30 W is about 3 ft, if u filter depth is low, u may have to use 20W. Since its not that expensive, u might as well get 2 of 20W and once your water is clear, u can keep one for spare. They also have Laguna brand made in US but it cost about RM450 to RM500. Apparently, its lifespan is worst that made in china? not sure but thats what he said.

It looks like those aquarium heater, something like our flouresent light with wire from one end. U need to just tie it to one of your PVC pipes in your filter and leave it vertically.

Not sure anyone else in the forum has better and cheaper alternative.

I may be qoing to Arowana Aquarium and maybe Atari this weekend and will check out the prices. I believe they will be more expensive that the one quoted.

Will let u know the brand.

Hi Vince, i'm also from KL. I got mine 20W for RM120. So, the price they quoted you is reasonable. Sorry, i think it was RM130 listprice but I asked for a discount.

hi chris..

settlement chamber suppose to b empty, not fill with brushes..SlyLaugh.. may b 1 or 2 row is fine ..

personally i think UV at the last chamber will not b as good.. well.. i might b wrong, lets hear from some other suggestions...

Hi all... wow... jst few days... hav so many koi friend jointed tis post n jst say Hi to all of UWinkWinkWink

At, 1st I do agree tat cleaning the filter media too often is not gd for gd bact... as gd bact need ammonia as their foodTongueTongue... bt flushing the water at filter it's fine for the filter... n I personally think tat how often flushing is also matter, as all depend filter size, no. of kois, food feeding (grow food or colour... as grow usually more oily) & etc.... So, for my case as my filter only is near 10% of the pond... so, if I flush it or clear it once a mth.... maybe not enough, as we usually recomend 30% filter... so if 30% can last once per mth for flushing ler, so my 10 % can last for...hmmm.... almost every wk lor... (as now I also feed my kois wth Hikari grow n no using UV light)...

I had also ask chris n know tat his filter (30%) n WC ratio (1st per mth)... for me it is ok (jst flushig)... jst He added new water wthout anti-chorine... as we know chorine wil kill gd bact... so, it's difficult for his filter to grow sufficient gd bact for his pond... similar to we use tape water to wash our bio media n wil kill gd bact...

Abt why we need water chance... coz can reduce the nitrate concentration in the water... by wth right ratio ler...

Abt the UV light... I feel tat better dont depend on it so much... as I was told tat UV light is harmful to living tissue... so to gd bact... bt it's all depend the light output as well... as UV clarifier / surface UV light will affect the green algee cells... while, submersible UV light wil kil some bact n parasites in the water (only guess, pls correct me tq)... so, if U wan to keep gd bact then put U UV at the 1st chamber... as it kill som bact n parasites in the water frm pond... n then 'pure' water wil flow to bio media... n gd bact wil flow back to pond, if U hav green water problem... coz water green we dont know wat was happened to our kois (pls comment, as personal concept lerWinkWink)

However, if U hav gd filter n enough gd bact for u pond... then better dont use UV light... as algae is also gd for little live stock... n koi love little live stock... n also gd for the koi's immune system... coz tat in jp, koi breeders also keep their quality kois in mud pond... (it's jst all think ler, pls correct me, if I wrong...SmileSmile)...

Anyway, I feel great tat hav 'kaki' here to help our 'kaki'... so next time, if I need 'kaki' help... then friendly 'kaki' know how to do lor?SlySlySly...

Gd Nite to all gd 'kaki'

Re: [riolow] Diy Protein Skimmer... [In reply to] Can't Post

hi rio, heard from Chris that he have been having this problem from day one and it now been over a year hence thought to share my personal experience since we both have almost similar size pond and maybe i'm not that great a hobbist coz a little too tired compared to the beginning where i spent so much time in maintaining the pond.

In short, today, despite not spending that much time maintaining the pond, my water parameters are good, fishes are super healthy and touch wood not problem whatsoever except some disease which i experienced at the beginning which i have since learn a lot and has some little skills in curing them and success stories. Though it may seem that i'm one of the few that is lazy, ie flush only once in 1 or 2 months, cleaning media only once in 6 to 9 months compared to the rest that i read through various post, does flushing every week and so on.

There is no right or wrong but thought since i have no problems despite the laziness, hence just wanted Chris to take a break as from the post, i think he has done whatever others advise and yet having the same problem.

Hence, thought the root of the problem maybe just in front of him without him knowing!! ie changing the filter position, cleaning, etc just too often wihtout giving the bacteria a chance to even go through the real cycle. UV is a supplement to resolve his Green water problem and he should have it now until things are stabilised maybe 6 to 12 months down the road and not 2 weeks.

Anyway, good to hear many good people around helping each other with this hobby and now i really understand how such hobby can bring people together. Again, no offence as its just input from my personal experience which maybe wrong since am quite new compared to many who have been in this for years or century....

great to know all of u...of coz thru cyber world

Hi vince,

Yes, I do agree wth U too... as WC to often n change media position is nt gd for growing gd bact... again, I also used UV light when the yet to have enough gd bact... jst I cant stop meself busy wth my koi n pond... I'm too pasion ler BlushBlushBlush

Also if the water is green, we also cant know whether the kois r fine n hav to feed how many food to them...UnsureUnsureUnsure...

Anyway, if I'm chris... I also will install UV light....TongueTongueTongue

By the way, hav any 1 of u DIY the PS before? like Chris 1 or etc... As I did 1 be4 n it's not working ler... jst got water out not waste... (will attached photo later... )

Great to know all of you too - Koi Lover... in this wed-siteSmileSmileSmile

happy to hear that but lets monitor and see how it goes in weeks and months later.

Suggest if u could try to cover those edges to avoid the exposure of UV out from the filter as its not good for your eyes and knowing kids, they will get curiuos.

When u are down in KL, get those summersible UV as it is more effective and u have less problem with the above.

Re: [chriswu3311] Diy Protein Skimmer... [In reply to] Can't Post

Chris, my personal opinion, leave the UV for a while, ie 3 to 6 mths at least, otherwise u will have the same problem as i notice, previously when u took it away, the green was back.

Honestly, so far, after more than a year with UV on 24/7 since day one, i dont have any problems with my koi. I dont think UV do much harm to the koi nor good bacteria if we place it at the right place.

Dont think its a good idea to take it away not until your pond is stablised. Even if it is stablised and no harm noted, i dont see why we should take it away.

Just my thoughts. Rgds
