Hi Chris,

Well I am thinking about it but I have noticed my surface skimmer acts like a manual protein skimmer...Smile. Foams are trapped there and I have to manually removed it with by hand currently.

Re: [Epal63] Diy Protein Skimmer... [In reply to] Can't Post

Hahahah... a manual ps!!! I think the air supply is not strong enough, so cannot push the bubbles out from there.
Fine and strong air supply will do well for a PS....

My PS work not well bcos i didnt place a fine air stone on it.
I had try ceramic and wood air stone, but both need very strong air to support or else only come out with very small amount of tiny bubbles....
End up i place a normal air stone in it.... and it works well to me.
I think for my ps, its can only produce about 50% of protein from water, but if compare to others successful diy ps may b 90%....BlushBlushBlush
At least for few weeks run, i can see the result tat my pond water turn clear and less bubbles on the surface.
And my ps cost me only few ringgit.....

Hi Chris,

For sure the air supply is not enough. It is not meant to be a PS. That's why it is manual! Crazy But, it does help to reduce, but not eliminate, the overall bubbles on the surface! Smile

Hi Chris,

Here are the photos of my manual PS....Tongue

Ok. This is my normal looking Surface Skimmer, with a cover to prevent my guppies being sucked into my filter! It is at 45degree angle.

When the cover is taken off, you can see the foam collected in the Surface Skimmer.

Ok, this is the manual cleaning process.....Tongue The foam can be cleaned up within 1 min or 2.

This is what I do before I feed my koi - cover-up the surface skimmer with this... so no food pallets are sucked into the filter.Smile

Your comments please...Wink

Other sifus....appreciate if you can also comment if this is in effect serving as a PS....although it is not the most efficient way.

Thank you.

Hi Epal63,

I think tat is only a surface skimmer, my S.S also hav a lot bubbles stuck on it.
As long as it can collect the bubbles from the water surface then it is ok liao...

Do u mean will tat do the job like ps? i think only can collect a bit protein from water..
tat just my thought...
If a ps really work u will see the different, like wat we say in chinese we can see the water turn 'soft'.
My diy ps not work well but at least i can c the different of the pond water....

U hav guppies in yr pond too, the kois not eat them? koi is blind eating..
i think sometime they will accidentally swallow the guppies...Pirate

ps. i posted new pic on page 4, pls comment.

Re: [chriswu3311] Diy Protein Skimmer... [In reply to] Can't Post

Hi Epal, as what Chris said, its a surface skimmer, it helps to get rid of bubgle/ foam on surface of the pond especially oily surface that contributed by the food pallets. I think there is some flaw in the design as normally, u dont need to clean up the foam as it will go directly into your filter chamber and disintegrate itself? maybe you want to share how the set up was? FYI, its not a Protein Skimmer as what Chris has done. Anyway, once your pond is matured, u dont really need Protein Skimmer. Those foams are normally sign of your water parameters are deteriorating or you may have salt in your pond. After draining a couple of times 10 to 20% of your pond water, it will be gone as long as your filtration is matured.
Chris, your water seems to have improved.Do you have bandaraya in your pond? looks like plenty of algae and those fellow can help cleaning those green algae but as usual, pls make sure u quarantine them good, more than koi as u cant really see if they are infected wtih disease....

Hi Chris,

Yes, it is a SS. It thought it is getting rid of the protein as well....that's why I called it ...manual PS....manual cleaning mah.Crazy The rate of foam collected varies on a daily basis. Some time a lot more on certain days.

Water turning 'soft'....don't know lah....I only can see if the water is clear or not.Wink

Yes I have guppies in the main pond. My koi is still young, so I think they won't eat them. In fact the guppies multiplies like crazy in the pond. Some of the guppies went into my filter chambers ( 1 and 2). And they multiply there too!Laugh

Your pond water is looking good!

Re: [vince68] Diy Protein Skimmer... [In reply to] Can't Post

Hi Vince,

I believe the food I am feeding my koi is oily - so that's my first target to change it the next round I buy new food stock.

As with my pond set-up, if you could read "Another shallow pond" thread in Members' Pond forum, you can have a good idea of my pond setup. Not sure if there is anything specifics that you are looking for that I have not mentioned there.

For 1 thing, my pond commissioned 2.5months ago with plenty of salt being put in, together with AnitCholorine. Nothing else was used. I had changed my water twice (30% each time) - that was before my "green water" problem. Since then, I only top-up my pond water and water overflowed due to the rain - which happened a few times last week - rain.

The foam that I cleaned from the SS is usually yellowish in color. On top of that...lots of dark green/yellowish stuff in the SS - I think it is koi sh*t?

I really would like to hear your views on how I can improve this.

Thanks.
