i also fed on oily food, namely Saki Hikari and those oily surface will be go through the SS and into the filter, it does accumulate at the SS. I think you problem is the suction of the SS into the filter which is weak hence unable to perform as such and stays at the SS instead.
If not much of a maintenance, then let it be as doesnt really matter. How much salt is still in your water? Assuming if u have 0.3, with 30% change twice, its should have been diluted and dont think u will see much foam. Its good if u can do some quick check on your water parameters, ie salt levels, NO2, NO3, Ammonia, and your PH.
I used to have the same problem with foam a few months back, i realise it was due to salting but after a couple of water change at about 20%, the foam didnt re appear though i have a HB 80 hp, serving my main pond (remember almost similar size that both Chris and yours).

hi chris, yes algae is good but too much of it, makes your pond looks dirty....its more cosmetic than anything...i had 5 bandaraya where i think they are about 1 feet long hence cant see much algae left...

Hi Vince,

You mentioned that the suction of the SS is weak. How do I improve the strength? My thinking is that foam is collected in SS because there is too much protein in the water - thus creating a PS effect.

I have to get a salt tester so I have yet to test the salt content for my pond water. One strange observation is that the bubbles varies. Some days the bubble is alot and some days it is very minimal. The strangest thing is on the day when there is alot of bubbles, it disappears during feed time! Crazy Therefore, I am not too sure if the bubbles are due to salt, but a few people also reckoned it is due to salt.

Re: [Epal63] Diy Protein Skimmer... [In reply to] Can't Post

Epal, yes, when u feed your koi, they will start breaking the foam hence it seems dissapeared but after a couple of hours, it will start to build up again. Your SS will not be effective if the foams are thick and looks a little dirty. These are protein where Chris PS may help. But best is to make water change as normally its sign of trouble as i had the same a couple of times and water parameters looks fine but it start to smell fishy hence did a quick water change and in fact a thorough clean up of the jap matts, brushes and filter chambers.... Immediately after that, it looks good. BUt its a risky job as if there isnt enough good bacteria in the pond, then your water will be cloudy etc. remember, when u clean your filter thoroughly, keep your pond water as much as possible and dont drain them as there are good bacteria there whcih u need when your filter have been thoroughly clean. My advise only do that once in 6 mths....to be safe, just clean the dirt that sits on it and not entirely....

Hi Vince,

Thanks for your advice.

Do you think that if I add water to the pond on a regular basis would serve the same effective, rather than doing a WC and cleaning the filter? Is it safer than touching the filter system?

Hi Epal,

Last few days my pond also hav a lot bubbles, after doing 15% water change (yesterday) and now no more bubbles on the pond surface......
I think the bubbles disappear when feeding is bcos of the kois splash on the water, My pond also like tat...
Wat do u think??

Epal, dont worry about your filter, changing 20 to 30% of your pond water is normal and some hobbyist does that every week with some at extreme of every couple of days.

If u have not dont so since the beginning, do it now before its too late...

I personally believe that in all pond there are readily diseases but due to the strong immune of the koi, they do not get it but they will when their immune is low and that will happen if water parameters are poor. Similary, like all of us, we are bound to catch cough and cold as its already in us but only start coughing and sneeze when our immune are low.

hahah... no worry, if any thing happen a lot sifus here can help u....Tongue hahaha... just joke.

I dont know how yr filter system run, u can just clear up the settlement chamber and drain some water.... no need clean the media at all.
I m doing 10-15% water change once a week, wash brush once every 2 weeks, wash filter media twice a year...
Remember to add anti chlorine when top up water..

Re: [Epal63] Diy Protein Skimmer... [In reply to] Can't Post

if u had and at least once a month if not in 2 months, as its needed to flush out all the waste collected in the filter before NO2 starts to kick in. as for me, i dont keep track that closely hence always start flushing and WC aboout 20% and conincidently every 2 months when i see foams being collected. There is a couple of times where the change didnt completely remove the foams hence did another 20% a week after.

Anyway, there is no real rule but at times we just dont want to lose our priced possession and after spending thousands and tens of thousands or some even hundred of thousand by taking chances hence u notice some are to the extreme but to no fault of any but merely being careful so that we dont make silly mistake and lose thousands...

Yesterday, I noticed that there is less foam collected in the SS. Maybe this is due to the water top-up I did on Sunday?

Hi Chris,

You are right. It is not safe to put guppies in the main pond. Yesterday night, I witnessed the most horrific attack from my Ogon on the guppy. First bite - killed the guppy instantly! Crazy Second bite - swallowed the whole guppy at one go.Shocked And it was one of my bigger guppies! Today, I took out all my guppies from the main pond to prevent further losses on my guppies!Pirate
