Help with Hayward Filter Can't Post

Hello, I have a 21" Hayward Sand Filter filled with Ultima II media (approx. 2-2.5 cu. ft.). I was wondering if anyone has experience with this type of filtration. I am not sure why my media seems to be weighted to the bottom of the chamber, not releasing the particles during backwash mode. I do get relatively brown water out of the backwash, but no solids. When I remove the canister lid it is evident that fine particles of waste, hyacinth root fibers, etc. are still in the canister. I have read that Ultima II filters have internal jets that aid with the backwash process, but how are those attached!? Can I retro fit them? I know that LeeFamilyKoi.com sells my type of filter with custom made laterals, but I am not sure how the PVC they use ball joints into the Hayward existing internal column. Any advice on modifying this for the better will greatly help me and relieve my nerves! Here is a pic of the Modified laterals from Lee Family Koi: http://www.urban-koi.com/filter3.jpg

Thanks,
John

Re: [eps] Help with Hayward Filter [In reply to] Can't Post

Hi,
We just bought a 24" hayward filter for the same idea with the same type of media. Only we filled a quarter of the tank with pool filter sand and a quarter, about 2 cubic feet, with sinking bio media. It's been running about a week, and so far with the help of a U.V. light, the water clarity has gone from 25% to 100%. During backwash, only green particulates are released until the water comes out clear. Then we rinse, and the same thing happens till its clear. But to explain the lack of solids, we have a prefilter, which is basically a pool cartridge filter without the cartridge, but with foam wrapped around the cartridge holder. It helps to trap large-medium sized particles before the sand/bio filter. Also, these filters are plumbed with a parallel bypass, which helps when the valves are open/closed the right way to direct more flow to the backwash.
One other thing you could try is connecting an airline to the drain of the sand filter. Tee the drain off with two ball valves on each end. Then, on one end put a check valve and a fitting to your airline. While backwashing, let the air break loose the solids in the media bed.
Hope I was of some help.
Ask me more questions you have about this system, as it seems to be working for us.
