Improved Skippy filter...hopefully! Can't Post

Hello again Koi Muskateers,

Yes i am trying out the skippy filter, but it being revised and CLEANED periodically.Tongue I have a question can i put a couple of bags of coral or oyster shells in the settlement chamber at way bottom or not in order to buffer ph.Crazy Im testing it out b/c my cyprio bio force was too small and not efficient enoughUnsure. The setup is a 1oo gallon stock tank with a pre- installed drain plugCool. My pond is around 2000 gallons. The system is gravity fed also by the way. Please offer any criticism Blush. Also ill post before and after pics to show change in water quality.

thanks again

chris

Sorry its real hard to see the pic. couldnt figure out how to make it bigger with still being able to see the wordsMad.lol. but any way water enters from top pvc and travels down to each side pvc creating a vortex as it comes out.

1st space= settlement chamber

2nd space is the floor spongy scrubbing material

3rd space is floating plants and anachiris

there is a 4 inch return pipe leading to pond via gravity.

sorry

Hello

Just wondering how your skippy filter is doing was thinking of building one but have not really heard how well they work except for what is on the skippy website. Hope you are having good luck with yours and catch you soon.

Sorry guys (gals) ,
I took so long. I havent been to this board in ages now. Ive started a reef tank also, so my time has been there. I actually modified my filter in using bags of lava rocks and then pond filter padding I got on eBay for like 12 bucks. It comes in a 10 foot by 2 foot roll. My koi have spawned and I have about 20 babies swimming with the others now. I have not cleaned the filter since I set it up, and knock on wood everything has lived and is still doing fine. If those acorns would stop falling I would totally be happy!

Just a thought.,
If your using a skippy, how is the bottom a setteling chamber? Im instaling one now and I would think the crud from the bottom drain would just pass through the stock tank.? Do the pads of scrubbie mat
block the gunk on the way up??/ Just wondering.Wink

Re: [kolipo] Improved Skippy filter...hopefully! [In reply to] Can't Post

It is sort of a long story........ I am using two 50 gal skippys. I should really have about 150 gal worth of filter.
The pond was filthyPirate The imature filter could not filter out all of the crud. The bottom settling chamber portion of the Skippy did catch a lot of crap however.Shocked

I emptied the pond completely, took out fish gravel plants etc.

The pond now has the same two filters but one is in part a mechanical filter. The water goes thru the mechanical filter first before proceeding into the regular skippy filter.

The filters consisted of 50 gal rubbermaid containers with PVC tubing a T at the bottom to split the water and a screen just like the original skippy.
The one filter was converted to mechanical duty by adding a 5 gal pail within a smaller 20 gal rubbermaid container.
Both of these go inside the larger 50 gal rubbermaid container.

The water goes into the top of the 5 Gal pail tru a fitting in the cover, It goes down thru a bunch of round scrubber pads incrematally finer grades. The last pads are foam.
Holes in the bottom sides of the pail allow the water to fill the 20 gal rubbermaid. it then overflows the 2o gal container and falls down tru more filter media in the form of folded filter fabric. It comes undeneath the 20 gal container into the inside of the 50 gal skippy filter with the square scrubbies floating iside. The spill of this filter feeds the one remaining regular Skippy filter WoooshLaugh! That was a mouth full.

Bottom line- the water is great!!! The fish are happy and visible Sly

The clean up was over a month ago. I'm hoping the filter keeps up the ggod work.

In conclusion ......... If you can help the Skippy with some pre filter or mechanical filtration it won't hurt unless your pond is fairly clean to begin with.

My pond gets decent sunlight and lots of leaves falling into it.

Ok I have a question.. can I have a bottom drain sent to the skippy, have the skippy flow into another 50 gal tank and run the a pump from there back into the pond ?

Re: [hodge] Improved Skippy filter...hopefully! [In reply to] Can't Post

you could.
However Ive read its best to run your bottomdrain to a settelment tank first (vortex drum or preferably a vortex tank) This makes good sence becoase its going to be easier to have the vortex drum or tank clean the water before it gets to your bio filtration stage. I shure dont want to clean heavy materials like fish poop and dead leaves off my 3m media so I wouldnt recomend it. Try to clean the water as much as possible first than go to your bio filter.
I do like your idea of having the skippy gravity fed though. My stock tank is going to take a while to hide with the plant material im planning on planting around it.(since its above ground)
good luck and have fun.
