KOI ROLL OVER- NEED HELP! Can't Post

HELLO, I HAVEA POND WITH MATURE AND YOUNG KOI, NO NEW ONES ADDED EVER. I HAVE RETURNED FROM OUT OF TOWN (MY HUSBAND'S FISH) AND POND GUY-MAINTENANCE PERSON UNREACHABLE).
PROBLEM- YOUNG WHITE KOI- ABOUT 6 INCHES LONG- IS AT THE BOTTOM OF THE POND- UPSIDE DOWN- UNABLE TO MOVE. I THOUGHT IT WAS DEAD, BUT IT IS STILL BREATHING, GILLS MOVING SLIGHTLY AND MOVONG IT'S MOUTH. I LEFT IT OVERNIGHT, AND IT IS STILL THERE- NOT SURE HOW LONG IT HAS BEEN LIKE TIHS. I CAPTURED IT VERY GENTLY IN THE SKIMMER, TURNED IT RIGHT SIDE UP, NEAR THE SURFACE, STILL SURROUNDED BY WATER. IT IS VERY COLD HERE IN DALLAS, TEXAS. THE WATER HAS A UV FILTRATION AND WATERFALL AND FILTER. NOT SURE OF WATER TEMP. AND SIZE, ETC. PLEASE HELP. THANK YOU!

To me it sounds like a parasite my koi had, but there would need to be more information to determine that. First off I would suggest moving this to the koi health and disease forum where it will get noticed by more people who know about this type of thing and you should get help there within a day.

Hi, Thanks for the reply. I did also put this on the other thread you mentioned. Unfortunately we lost the little guy. If I find out what was wrong with it, I will post it. Thank you.

Could be he just wasn't handling the sudden temperature drop you guys had. If it happens again, get a stock tank and put it in your garage. Slowly warm the fish up and see if that does it. I had that happen to me a few times. Young koi are the most susceptible to it as they have never wintered before.

I do believe he said the fish died already. My post was what to do if it happens again. You can jump right in and throw a chemical cocktail at a stressed fish if you want or you can do the smart thing and see if the problem is purely a cold water issue...that's your call.

The smart thing would be to bring the next one in, warm it up and then scope it for parasites to see what it has or if it has anything before you try every treatment known to man hoping that one of them will work....but...i guess that's just me.

Re: [Dayleen] KOI ROLL OVER- NEED HELP! [In reply to] Can't Post

Hello all,

I did bring the little fish inside, just in case. I do not have a tank, so someone suggested on Koivet to bring him inside in pond water in a container overnight. I am sure it is dead, and I do see signs of red in the upper fins. I hear that is stress. I am sure he is a young fish not used to the cold. I will post agin if any other things come out about it. The water levels tested normal, except high hard water.

**In the future, I would absolutely bring it inside immediately to warm it up slowly, in the pond water, in a large container, if no tank. Then assess him the next day.

Good news, the others seem to be just fine. I hope this all helps someone else someday save their fish.

Thank you all. Merry Christmas.

Daylene I whole heartly agree with you. I could have been many things that cause the problem. I dont think it was water temps though. Im not saying that it was not that I just think it was from parasite and the koi could not handle the problem after the water temp droped. Is so hard to tell when you dont get a scope on the koi to see what is wrong in the first place so you will know how to treat.
