Koi Transportation Can't Post

Hey all,

I've got several large Koi (24"+) and Dozens of koi that are a little less than a foot in legnth that need to be transported nearly 1000 Miles. From Pennsylvania to my new home here in Florida... I dont have any idea how I am supposed to go about this.

I was thinking of purchasing some large rubbermaid- containers- filling them with the pond water- getting several airation pumps and take a trip with a moving truck on a straight forward drive to florida.... Any suggestions?

hmmm that may work, try getting double the rubbermaid containers, filling all of them up equally, except only putting fish in half of them, with air stones.

then half way on the trip, you can move all the fish into the other containers and move the airstones into the other containers that the koi are now in it.

sounds like a good idea to me.

oh you may want to put ice around there containers to keep them cool and enable more oxygen in the water.

what is a safe way to move them without hurting them? I usually just use a large fish net, but sometimes I can see their scales flake off Unsure- If I had 2 containers. One for the large fish and the other for the smaller fish, and had air stones in both of them, do you think that would be sufficient?

no no no, i was saying, buy all the needed containers for the fish, BUT DOUBLE THE CONTAINERS AS IF YOU HAD DOUBLE THE FISH.

FILL ALL THE CONTAINERS YOU BOUGHT WITH WATER, USE ONLY HALF OF THE CONTAINERS AT THE MOMENT, AND HALF WAY THROUGH THE TRIP, MOVE THE FISH INTO THE OTHER HALF OF THE CONTAINERS, ALONG WITH THE AIRSTONES. THIS SHOULD REPLENISH THEYRE ENVIROMENT, HOPE THIS WORKS.

Re: [skyy406] Koi Transportation [In reply to] Can't Post

Hi Skyy406,

I don't have any opportunity to move at such distances so cannot claim any experience in this.

From what I have read from hobbyists who had to do so, some had discouraged moving kois in hard containers as the koi could damage themselves on the hard sides. Plastic bags still appear to be the recommended mode of packing kois. If you are able to get hold of oxygen tank, packing oxygen into the bags will last even longer (24 hours?). The plastic bags can be put into the rubbermaid containers and padded on the sides with newspaper. The expired air can be replaced everyday. I am assuming your road trip will take days.

make sure the bags are placed on the right orientation to prevent nose burns due to our braking actions. Need to have some replacement water and extra bags/rubber bands.

I would strongly suggesting talking to your local koi club for information.

cheers..

Hi!,

I agree with GCSpyder. Best to packet each koi separately with pure O2 pump in. Wink
When more than one koi inside - tends to rub each other during the rough handling.
Lose scaling, fins get cuts, abrasion, etc....Tongue

Also, remember to fast (do not feed) your koi 7 days before the trip. Crazy
Don't worry - they won't die due of hunger.
In facts - they are likely to die when it release its waste matters which in turns polute the water.
3 days of fasting not enough. Angelic
