It's okay to have lights in your pond. I have 3 lights. I'm using 3 x 12volts stainless steel fully submergeSmile

You just have to make sure that the light is actually design for under water. You can also use spa light, but they
are priceySmileWink

for as long as u use a transformer for the lighting changing the current from either 110 volt or 220 volt to a 12 volt, you are safe. You can use a garden type of fixture for this task. They key is to use silicone seal in places where water might leak in. I tried this and it worked. However don't forget to check the condition of the silicone once in a while as it may crack.

There is one drawback in having a lighting fixture in the pond. With a lighting fixture in the pond, the fine debris flying in the water becomes visible and that distracts our attention to the kois. Therefore unless you have a very clean pond I would suggest you light the pond from outside.

You can buy them in any pond suppliers. They are design for under water use and normally aluminum. Just make sure that its 12voltsSmile but I would recommend stainless steelWink

One thing to be very carefull of is that even with proper pond lights where the lights are designd to be submerged, most of the low voltage transformers 240v 110v to 12v are not always outdoor transformers and therefore need to be either indoors/outbuilding or as I have done in a weather proof locker ajacent to the pond

Sorry! Hi All, new to this forum, have loitered but first post!

Hi Jon

Thanks for the greeting!

In the UK where I am we have a set of rules laid out by the IEEE where units are given an IP rating, (not sure how this is in other countries) weather proof needs to be IP65 or better IP66, unfortunatley transformers run hot therefore it is easier fora manufacturer to incorporate vent slots in the casing for cooling and even when these are not present it is still not obvious that the casing is not water proof, and mains voltage at any value coupled with water is a recipy for disaster, so check what the standard for your country, or ensure the transformer is out of the weather! Sorry lecture over, I have successfully fitted both garden lighting and pond lighting for over 20 years, with the former both mains and low voltage, and as long as the manufactures instructions are followed there should be no unforseen problems, Fit correctly, Maintain, and sit back and enjoy the added view in the evening, "a drink in hand usually enhances this especially with a few friends"Wink

Hi Graham,

Totally agreed againWink. Follow the manufacturers instructions or if still in doubt call license electrician. Last thing you want is frying you fishCrazy Here in Downunder they are very strict rules. Follow the rules and no trouble.

Not too much drink m8, you might wake swimming with kois the following morning, missus will be jealousTongue

Jon,

Just one concern...

Did you incorporate safety features on the electrical connection of lights to ohyour pond? A circuit breaker maybe? If so, can yiu share the circuit diagram here, please?

My concern is that if your electrical supply to your pnd (water/air pump, lighting , heaters, UV, etc) is tapped to the main supply at your house and in an event of (God forbid) leak, the whole house wil be affected.

Thanks.

I don't know where you live, but in the U.S. GFI Cucuits (ground fault interrupt) are normally used for outdoor plugs. The outlets have a built in circuit breaker that is more sensitive and faster acting than the breakers in the main fuse box. That way your home and outdoor lighting are both better protected.
