Media for DIY Filter Can't Post

I have a filter box with 6 chambers. I need some comments on my setup. What I did was:

1st chamber: settlement chamber. Just 1 or 2 Jap Mats to filter out big particles.
2nd chamber: 6 pieces of 3' brushes
3rd chamber: 6 pieces of 3' brushes
4th chamber: Bio balls
5th chamber: Bio balls
6th chamber: Some plants

Do you think this setup is good? Can someone give some comments? Thanks.

I'm new to this but it sounds like a good setup to me. How big is this container and for what size pond? Do you have any pics of the pond and filter?

Personally, I would replace the Jap Mat with some kind of foam or wadding sheet. Jap Mat is too expensive to be used as a strainer. Instead, put the Jap Matting in the last BioBall bay and shuffle the two bioball bays down one.

1 - Settlement with Foam/wadding strainer (clean foam regularly)
2 - Brushes (in fact you may not need the brushes at all if the 1st bay is straining out string algae and big stuff - perhaps try Flocor in this bay, its like lots of small lengths of plastic corrugated pipe)
3 - Bio Balls
4 - Bio Balls
5 - Jap Mat (aerated)
6 - Plants

I'll try and explain ... each piece is about 2 inches long, is tubular, made from black plastic that is ribbed around it's circumference. Place maybe a couple of hundred in a media bag and fill up a filter bay with media bags full of them.

For the self-regulation of PH levels, may I suggest adding either corals (crushed or other), or oyster shells to either the 5th or 6th chamber of the filter.

The shells will degrade with calcium carbonate if PH levels drop to acidic side, but in doing so, keep the PH of the water neutral and at a safe level for your koi.

Re: [koiguyoz] Media for DIY Filter [In reply to] Can't Post

I would like to thank everybody for the feedback. However, I went to Atarikoi, the owner's son I didn't get his name was telling me bioballs are only good for trickle filters and won't do anything good if submerged in water. He recommended me to get aqua clay and mix it with bio ceramic.

I did a little modification on my part. I notice that aqua clay actually floats. I was thinking to put aqua clay in the first chamber and place a few bio balls on top of it, modify my water inlet to a trickle and convert it to a mini trickle filter. I'm wondering if it will work. Anybody can comment?

Do refer to the attachment on how my filter looks like.

Hello Freer

From your illustration it seems like you are feeding your filter with water coming form yout TT. Just a reminder, water to be fed to the TT should be on the last chamber of your filtration. I would suggest a minimum 4 feet TT tower in order to work properly. Just look at the some of the discussions on TT on the Hot Topic Section of this forum.

Is it true that bio balls are only good for trickle towers and are not any good if fully submerged?Unsure

they are ok for bio media, but just not efficient for the same cubic area of space taken up vs. other bio media
