Moving Bed Filtration System DIY Can't Post

Last week, I got moving bed media from my friend. From Picture, it looks pretty close to K1 media from Kalness but at center divided to 3 instead of 4. The specific area is attached.

tao,

your media looks curiously similar to the K1 media. Did your friend made these himself?

The media was imported from US with the reasonable price to buy. That is why my project can be reality. Attached, please find the diagram for the system which is already up and running since 7 Dec 2005.

The system is used the counter flow concept of water and air. The water is fed from submersible pump through 1st chamber and flow downward to the outlet to the next chamber. 6 air stones are used to let media moving around and feeding oxygen for nitrification reaction.

The water fed to the system is came from modified overflow to be surface skimmer.

This was the old overflow.

I modified the outlet to be as picture below:

The water can flow through the pipe end and drilled space. During feeding time, the pipe end is closed to prevent food pallet to falling into it. Small barrel was reconnected to the outlet overflow pipe and use as submersible pump station (brown barrel).

The picture shows the whole unit using 3-200 ltrs barrels.

This shows the air vent from the outflow pipe. I drilled the outflow pipe and attached with stainless air valve.

Note that the outlet 3" pipe has slits to avoid clog at far bottom end. Also, at bottom end, the end of pipe was cover by plastic net.

To start new media, PP should be applied for half an hour and rinse with fresh water. It will accelerate the maturity of the bacteria. This tip is from NI 1st issue 2005.

tao,

yours is a better setup compared to mine when i used K1 media. Sometimes the 1 or 2 pc of the media would go into the pond. Wow, that's when panick mode sets in. Quickly go net it upMad. Now i used the K1 media as a static instead.

Hi Jon,

I log most parameters in the table sticking beside the pond including pH, NH3, NO2-, NO3-. Actually all parameters seem good pH around 7.8 No NH3 and NO2-, approx. 5 mg./ltr. of NO3-. But the water should be better since there are lots of sticky bubbles when comparing with my small pond. Will see the result. The other point is actually I want to have this kind of media since I read the article and saw a real unit of Nexus. I named my system as Naisuk (Happy Man in Thai) 5555! Will let you know for the improvement.

Cheers,

I suggest to put the plastic net at the inlet pipe to prevent the media escape from the unit. Pls. see the picture:

Hi Tao,

I'm thinking of adding the media you're using. Due to limited space I cannot have what you haveUnsure I have 3 chambers settlement, prefilter and biofilter.

My question to you is .......will I achieve anything if I add this type of media in my prefilter???

rgds,
Jon

My friend does the same thing. But this kind of media will give highest efficiency when moving. Putting in the first chamber which is mechanic filter may not achive the sediment (since we put air stone creating agitation inside).

Hi,

I think at least you get bio filtration and more oxygen in the pond. Dissolved Oxygen (DO) is always ignored since it is difficult to measure. But I saw one of my friend pond, 9 tons with same filtration volume! giving around 18 in total. He feeds his filtration system with 4-120 Hiblow! The water quality is so great.

Re: [chanin] Moving Bed Filtration System DIY [In reply to] Can't Post

This unit has served 200 Tons pond.
The old pumice stone has been supersede with moving bed media. They build a new basket to occupy the whole pumice chamber. The size of the basket was approx. 1.0(w)x1.2(l)x1.5(d) m3.
They used 300 liters of Moving bed media in their chanber.
According to their std recommendation, 300 liters of media needed to be feefed with 120 lpm air. By the way, HIBLOW-80 ( approx. 70 lpm) was equipped to supply the air to this moving bed section. Everything is Ok. All media moved as usual.
They normally feed their koi with 500 gram food per day.
