Moving Bed in Vortex DIY Can't Post

The main filtration is semi vortex which begins with vortex as mechanic filter follows with 2 up flows bio filter. The picture below shows the system. This one was taken long time ago when one chamber was JFM and the last one was volcanic stone.

Today, I changed the last one to moving bed using BCN-009. The vortex, mechanic filter chamber, was used JFM to trap the dirt. The problem I had was there was some small partical still accumulated in bio chamber. How to solve?

I went to one koi farm and saw Nexus Eazy. It worked very well. I went back home and tried to find out about it. After a while, I got an idea and began sketch on the paper.

Using the barrel inside as static bed for mechanic filtration.

Here is diagram. Hope, it is clear enough.

I extended the 4" pipe from bottom drain verticaly to the middle of the vortex and do the slit for the water flow out.

At the middle is the fixed bed using BCN-009. This is mature media pic.

The barrel is drilled many holes at the bottom for water flow out. For the fixed bed, I put BCN-009 roughly 60 ltrs. The debri is caught in this bed. Then, the water flow downward and U-turn to the moving bed chamber which is made of PVC net. It is used Medo air blower 60 ltr/min. I put BCN-009 approx. 100 ltrs. in it.

The picture shows the unit. You can see the blue little basket attached to the side wall of the net. It is used to prevent the media to clog at the water outlet.

Now it is done at work!

This unit can utilize the mechanic filter to be bio filter without additional pump. Comparing to Nexus, the same size of Nexus can treat the pond size of 20-30 tons of water!

Lets see for a month. I will report later!

Hi Tao,

You've been busy again hey hey You did well mate...........but can I just make a suggestion. If this is your vortex/settlement, I will not bother adding air stones or a small moving bed out the drum. I will make a static vortex instead of having both. The out pipe in the middle may clog alot specially during heavy feeding then you'll have waste channeling through

I will do it this way which will be more effective, IMHO

Tao,

Nice filtering system, are you happy with concrete? how did you waterproof if?
also for the vortex what is the diameter and depth? did you make a cone base as well?

the base of the other chambers is inclined?

Do you advise concrete for filter chambers for someone building a pond?

Thanks
