My DIY TT Can't Post

Just posting pix of my DIY TT.

InsideTT1.jpg shows the construction I made to separate the levels of Alfagrog within the TT. There are 3 levels in total and plenty of room for the rocks to breathe.

I used sink mats and tied pieces of PVC piping to them to allow them to stand up.

InsideTT2.jpg illustrates the TT drum from above showing the inlet which is a piece of PVC piping - you can see the 1/4 inch holes drilled into it, each being 1 inch apart. There are similar holes on the other side of the piping.

Thx

Gouri

Hi Gouri,

Nice workCool Have you tested the flow of your spray bar, make sure the water covers the entire area. If not placing X will help or better a rotating spray barSmile

Thx Jon.

It's not covering the area yet but I think that's more down to the speed at which water is being pumped through.

If it's still the same after I get a new pump, I shall heed your wonderful advice!

Thx

Gouri

ps I like the idea of a rotating spray bar!!!! Cool

Hi Jon,

Do you have any suggestions for a rotating spraybar as the usual garden ones seem to small?

Hi Changnoy,

Your right, garden ones are way too small. Try plumbing supplies or large aquarium shops. If you can some 2in ones get them. If not luck with spray bar, you can use a 2in "+" section and use small and large holes to spread the water evenly. Don't drill all the pipes yet just try one first and check the water distribution. Good luckSmile

Jon

Re: [Koi38] My DIY TT [In reply to] Can't Post

I found out that the containers I used for the TT and my extra filter are not food grade. Having said that I had been using them for a couple of months last year, without any ill effects.

My question is, do you think I should replace these containers or is it safe to continue using them?

Thx

Gouri

Gouri,

If they have chemicals on them your fish should be dead the same day you started your TT. Now if you still don't feel comfortable with the containers you can pull them apart and clean them with salt with soft brush and waterWink. Another question is are they UV resistantCrazy, if not they will deteriorate in no time then collapseShocked

Jon

Well, I've been running them for months now - I was told that the containers may leech chemicals into the water - but this should have happened by now, right?!!

They are made from HDPE plastic (high density polyethylene plastic).

Not sure about UV resistant?!!!!

Still not sure what I should do! What would you do?

Thx

I dont think there is a problem- people use poly plastic for vortexes etc instead of fibreglass ones sometimes. I think if your koi were to be posioned they would have been by now. Just keep an eye

Smithy & koi38

Thanks for the reassurance!

I haven't attached the pump to the TT this spring for fear of something happening but now I think I'll take the risk and do it!

When it was attached last autumn, the water quality was much improved - I could see right to the bottom of the pond!

Thank you again!!!

digital cameras with leads to put them on your pc are a lot more affordable these days. Hope you can get one to share ideas- it is fine everyone talking but sometimes its just better to see things in the flesh to get a real perspective on what setups peoplehave and how theyve done them

Hi Jon.
I'm new here. Left rec.pond in the ng world. Just getting too "bizarre". This place looks wonderful! Anyway, real reason for the post, how did you construct you DIY skimmer? I have the IP200 skimmer connected to a 3" PVC pipe going to my pump (external) However, there does not seem to enough suction to make the skimmer function properly or efficiently. I can get great skimming if I "tinker" with with but that only last until the water level changes.
Thanks for your input.
GREAT looking pond you have there!

Re: [Muad`Dib] My DIY TT [In reply to] Can't Post

W. Dale,

The only thing I can think off is your skimmer is too high. Like you said if the water level changes it will not funtion properly which is similar to mine. But as you know mine is a DIY type. What I do is I adjust mine to suit the flow until it gets too low then I add more water when I do water change or when I flush my filtersSmile

Can you physically adjust(lower) your skimmer???

rgds,
Jon

Re: [Koi38] My DIY TT [In reply to] Can't Post

HI Jon,
Yeah, I can lower it a bit. I will give that a try and see if it helps. Right now it is working a little bit but just barely skimming and the flow is SO slow some stuff just drifts right on past the skimmer. I will keep fiddling with it and hoping that I do not have to purchase a pump just to drive the skimmer. I have a Sequence 5800 that is feeding 3 bio-mechanical filters and a veggie filter. I was hoping it will also be able to take care of the suction or flow needed for the skimmer. We will see.
Thanks for your tips and input.
Have a great week!
W. Dale
