Need help on Pond Waterproofing Can't Post

Good day, I have a question.

I have a ready made cement pond, 3'(W) x 4'(L) x 2'(D). I have been checking out the forum for advice and I understand in overtime, the water in the cement will be acidic which is dangerous for the fishes. So searching through the internet, it is advised to paint it over with a layer to EPOXY or LATEX compound which provides waterproofing too. I have been searching through fish shops, hardware shops and even koi ponds, but they dont sell or dont dare recommend anything which may or may not affect my koi. I hope from this forum someone is able to advice what product can I use and also where can I purchase the product.

regards.
Will

Hi Will,
I build ponds for a living. For your pond, easiest way it to buy some cementitious wasterproofing compound (contains cement ans latex). Builder's supply houses always have it. Mix as per instructions and paint on as many coats as you want (minimum of 2 but more is always better). Take care with the corners as this is where most leaks occur. This "paint" gives a pebbly texture and the colour can vary from grey to green. You may not like it. This coating is not very tough but you can walk in it with care. You can apply ceramic tile on top of this. It will turn the water alkaline, not acidic; but the alkalinity will decline over time. Maybe 3 weeks to 2 months.

The other cheap way is to buy cement sealer (also from builders supply). Then paint over it with any kind of paint. Give the paint time to harden and gas off (a Week) and it will be inert (make sure its not leaded paint!) Downside is that micro cracks can appear over time and you will lose the waterproofness. But this way is cheap.

I recommend fiberglass but I don't know of anyone who has done a good job first time around.

There are tons of products you can use but you don't always get what you pay for!

Is your pond cement or concrete? If concrete, then don't bother with any waterproofing! Just let the water leech out the lime and off you go!
