Need ideas to deepen pond Can't Post

Hi Friends- this is kind of a "Click and Clack" question - like, my husband and I can't agree on this. I have a natural pond - about 20 X 25 feet, but it is only about 18' deep at the most and it is based on ledge. Blasting is pretty prohibitive and probably the town wouldn't let us do it because it would disturb the underground river. The edges come onto a grassy bank and will spread with rain. It will freeze to the bottom unless we deepen it and Koi can't survive. Goldfish are doing awesome in it this summer! We'll try to winter them over in the mud (they were 24 cent feeder fish - now 6-8" goldfish).

I say we could deepen the pond with cinder blocks around the edge and a pond liner, but he says it will cost us about $3,000 to do it. I really want to deepen the pond so our Koi can go in and winter over at some point, but at that price, we can't do it. Any suggestions?

one way to hel prevent the pond freezing is water movement, keep the water moving all the time with water falls feature pumps etc

Once you start koi you just can't stop.

Thanks, we're going to try that. My friend wintered over Goldfish in a 75 gal. plastic pond with a pump running. Oh yes - my pond is 18 inches deep - not 18 feet deep. (I wish!) If it works, then the Koi can finally go home next spring. So far this year, no problem with Blue Heron. It came once, checked out all the netting and fake owl and has not returned. Hopeful!

there is other more affordable ways to do it ....like a shovel and a lot of dirt hehehehe ...thats way i did my ponds ...also by using bags of topsoil, potting soil , or anything of that nature , sand bags or anything really...but form a wall with the bagged product ...you may have to drain pond to do this ...then lap the liner up over the bagged soil ....and place rocks or dirt or what not to hold the liner in place.....you may loose a little on the length and width to compinsate for the depth you tring to achieve...unless you left a good bit of liner laped ....maybee this will help hopefully !!!!

Hi- it took me a while to get to this post. I must have skipped it. I like that idea about the sand or topsoil bags. Do you have any idea on the minimum depth we'd need to try for in subzero weather? The pump is keeping a hole open and the goldfish in the pond are alive still, so maybe it's more about keeping an open hole than the absolute depth. (?) Thanks for the advice, I'll be thinking about how we could do that. Could you post a picture of your pond to help me visualize?
