New filter. What do you think ? Can't Post

I'm building a new filter system for my new 3000 litre pond. The pump will also be changed to an Oase Aquamax 4000 solids handling pump (http://www.oase-pumpen.com/uk/pdb/produkt_liste.php?wgru_key_wgru=1194)

I intend to build the filter out of 5/8" marine plywood and then cover it inside and out with fibreglass. However I still don't have a clear idea of how I am going to manufacture the vortex. Here is a diagram of what I intend doing. Your comments and ideas are appreciated.

make sure to take note of the GPH flow of the UV. most UV's require a low GPH flow. that would in effect minimize the flow of water through your filter. maybe you can split the output of the pump - one goes direct to the filter, the other from the UV.

the venturi is not very efficient in adding air (i.e. using up too much water pump power just to produce air) use an air pump instead.

would the cost be prohibitive if you just had your filter made straight out of FG instead of coating wood with FG? FG makers make cylinder shapes easy.

I was intending of building the filter myself that is why I thought of the process in my previous thread. I have no mould for the fibreglass filter and have never worked with FG before, so I was thinking of building it out of marine plywood and coating all with FG. Would make it heavier but I don't intend transporting it to and fro but just leave it in its place.

I was also thinking of building a quarantine tank in this way too.

The filter design looks good.

If this is new pond. I suggest to change few things.

- Do gravity feed to the 1st chamber from the bottom drain using 4".
- Put lots of airstones in the 4th chamber.
- Put pump in the last chamber use 2" connector... you can Tee the output.. one go to the pond... another one to the UV then back to the pond... use ball valves to control the water flow.

No it's not a new pond. Current filter is pump-fed not gravity-fed. Must keep it that way as pond does not have a bottom drain.

Setup looks very good. I hope to do something similar- as im a newbie and at the moment only have a pump fed system up to a bio box.

I don't know how far along you've gotten with your filter construction, but if you're still planning to use a venturi nozzle for air at the inlet you might want to consider something like this instead. It doesn't restrict flow or create any added backpressure on your pump.

As mentioned before, it would still be a good idea to add air with an air pump in your biomedia chamber, and you may want to consider static k1 or similar instead of foam.(easier to clean up).
