New koi and blue heron Can't Post

Hi All - I think my pet store made a delightful mistake by selling me two koi as pond goldfish! One is orange on top of body with pearl white scales and the other is marked like a calico cat. This is so dumb, but I've never had fish other than goldfish. Are they really koi? These two each have two short "whiskers" below their mouth. I have no idea how to take care of them in an aquarium, but cannot put them in the pond until I rid myself of a pest. A great blue heron destroyed all my goldfish. He is HUGE - about 6' stretched out. Any ideas on how to keep him out of my pond? Thanks for your help. In revenge (and gratitude for the koi mistakes), I will call myself blueheron.

Attach a picture of your "may be koi" at the Koi Appreciation section so that someone can identify it for you.

For 6' heron issue, I would probably secure a net screen cover pond to protect the fish. How big is your pond.? How about post a picture of your pond at the Member's Pond section.

I had a similar problem at our pond. the owners before us put in a heron scarecrow. According to the previoius owners only one heron will feed at a pond. They went out and bought a fake lifesize heron and put at the side of the pond. There have not been any problems since.

If you say they have two whiskers (barbel) then they must be kois.

cheap way of getting rid of heron!!! Drive some short stakes in the ground and tie fishing line and criss cross the fishing line so the heron will get caught in it if it trys to get in your pond. Wont have anymore trouble with that heron after a while if it dont get hung in the fishining line then it will leave cause it cant get fish. Will go somewhere else for a free and less expensive meal.Wink

Sorry (not to offend anyone) but I don't recommend using fishing lines strung across the pond. I have seen what these things can do to birds and as far as I'm concerned ... it's inhumane.

Kingfishers and other birds will dive into your pond for fish, and they don't see the string. Hence they wind up with broken wings (if they don't snap their necks first) and unable to fly. If strung low to the ground, sometimes big birds will try to go in and get caught in the webbing and wind up drowning.

The suggestions above are not bad ideas. You can also try the Scarecrow. A water spitting bird when it detects motion. I've used this and has worked for me.

Got ya Bran, I wont let my boyfriend kill the blue heron on the pond out in the country that we have but when it comes to my koi I cant see a couple of grand going down a herons throat. Even I dont eat a meal that cost that much.Smile !!! That is what I would do as to not take any chances in my koi being a meal for a heron, and from what I can tell, that is what the Japanese do to pervent other fish eating birds eating the koi out of their pondWink

Spent several weeks in Japan (Niigata, Kyoto, Hiroshima ..etc) and visited some of the well known breeders as well as some of the top (Kuroki, Adatchi, Annabuki, Watanabe, Kishi etc.) ZNA members. Didn't see one that had fishing lines strung across their pond.

But I can see how you would want to protect your investment. I can't blame you for that, but I'm still not in favor of injuring an animal without trying out my other options first.

It's always fun to see an old post start up again. For those who don't know me, those 2 "goldfish" certainly were Koi. I have 9 now wintering inside.

We netted the pond this summer and did not lose any fish. We also bought a fake owl and moved him around occasionally on posts. His head moves. The heron was here one time only. We placed the nets on electric fence posts and ropes (not too aesthetic, but it seems to have worked). I think a "scarecrow" water squirter would work great, but I haven't gotten around to getting one.

Re: [Koihuggr] New koi and blue heron [In reply to] Can't Post

can someone explain to me why a heron is supposed to be scared of an owl? do owls prey on herons? or are owls territorial and chase off herons?

ive seen other people tie compact discs tied to stakes so that when the wind blows, the cd's flash their shiny sides intermittently (and that, they say is like a scarecrow)

We used to use tin pie plates tied to stakes to keep herons away from our trout pond.
