New pond with liner Can't Post

Hi all, this is my first post here. I am researching for info on building a koi garden pond. I have a limited land area of 13' by 8'. As such, I would like to build a pond at about 8' H x 5' W x 3' D leaving some space all round for edge works and filter system. I am thinking of using a liner but it seems like it is not a popular method used in Malaysia. Any reason why..is it because of the weather..etc?? Having said that, are there any recommendations where I could get these liners in Malaysia? All advice appreciated.

if your thinking about a new koi pond a must is to check out this site it is a great tool for the ponderer. http://www.angelfire.com/home/drttk/information/beginer.html
also http://www.geocitys.com/koifla/New_Pond.htm
basicly though you need to start with a liner either way. If you do a cement pond you will want a buffer if your cement cracks. so the liner will take over the waterproofing in case of earthquake or freezing. So go ahead and start with the liner method but make shure its done right! you can allways cement over a liner. Im a beginer too so take this info as such. Ive read its best to cement first than the liner than more cement but that just might be a little too fanatical for your needs?? spend as much as you can on the filter design and footprint as you can becoase thats what makes a koi pond shine. hoever im working on this still and its not to fun after the fact of already installing the pond. (retrofiting is not what you want to do for best results ) but im still having fun with it! but im weird so? peace yall!

Re: [kolipo] New pond with liner [In reply to] Can't Post

Thanks for the input. Actually I am undecided about using only cement or cement with liner. I have a prety small piece of land. I have been going through the forum and various members' homepages. I hope to pick up some knowledge and then post back here with a startup plan. Hopefully by then I could get some inputs from all the "sifus". As it is now, I have a very small pond with some cheap Kois..that has already got me fascinated. I have attached a small picture of the exsiting pond. I intend to turn the whole piece of land into a pond as big as the whole thing could fit.

There is also a choice of using concrete 'H-blocks' (looks like bricks, is made from concrete, and features in many industrial buildings) on top of a concrete base (reinforced with steel bars) that has the bottom drain(s) plumbed in. All of these can then be coated with a pond safe sealant coat/paint. In Australia, I'm going to use a product called Pondtite.

Chiaks, you might want to check out www.koivet.com and their message board www.koivetforum.com for more construction ideas.

Thanks for the picture! Im in the same boat as you start with a pond/ Fountain water feature and whoa get addicted! When you cemeted the rim of the pond did you just mortar over rocks or is that all cement? Im trying to figure out a way to faux finish a fake rock but im kinda stumped on how to acheive it. Your pond seems close to what im wanting to do. Howd you do that? its cool !!.

Ben, thanks for the suggestions. I guess I will use bricks to retain the side walls. Need to check for more details on this.

As for my existing pond, I laid stones around the edge of the pond. When I was satisfied with the rim pattern, I practically "smashed" handful of cement over them to get the natural texture. Then painted the cement with a combination of brown, black and white emulsion paint. It took me 3 weeks, RM1000 and a bad back for a week to finished up what's seen in the picture.

Unfortunately I will be tearing it down pretty soon because I want to build a proper koi pond over the whole area with filter system and all. Currently it does not have any filtration, water just gets pumped up to the top and it overflows back down. I am using anti-algae treatment to control the green water...but seems like I am losing the battle. Feeling sad for the Kois.

I was going through Dr. Tan's website and practically printed everything that I could get out of it. I wonder if he checks this thread. I have a few questions to start out with. Maybe kolipo can help me.

1. It seems like it is strongly recommended to have a drain pipe from each filter chamber leading to a sump chamber. What is the advantage of having the drain pipes to the sump rather than straight out of to the sewer?

2. What is a "bottom-push"?

3. To build a pond with "bottom drain", is "bottom drain" a hardware part by itself to be bought and installed at the bottom of the pond? Or it is just a noun for a hole to drain water out from the pond to the filters?

BTW, kolipo, where are you from? I am from Shah Alam, Malaysia.
