PVC Coil Mats as Filter Media Can't Post

Hi,

I'm new, but have been lurking and learning a lot from the "sifus" here Smile.

Has anyone tried using PVC Coil mats (the kind we use for car or doormats) for wet biofilter media (in place of Jap mats) and Trickle Tower (in place of bio balls)?

I am wondering if it works. For sample of media, see: http://3gmat.en.alibaba.com/offerlist.html

Thanks.

Which one are you referring to? The green s-mat/z-mat looks like it could work, but I can't tell enough about the others to see if they are open weave or closed cell.

Thanks, Larz1Smile. Both types are available in the market, but I will opt for the open weave as suggested.

Did some googling and found out that there is already a similar specialised product in the market called Matala (http://www.matalausa.com/matalausage.html).

Cheers.

I've never used it myself, but Matala is very popular with some of our members.

Have only looked at Matala on the net realize that it comes in different densities.... but It looks just like home air conditioner ''permenant'' filter material!!!.... Is it the same... certainly would be cheaper based on the net ads I have seen...

The only problem with HVAC filters is knowing what kind of adhesives are used to hold the fibers together. Many of them are made in exactly the same way and with the same materials as biofilter mats, but the HVAC adhesives are prone to break down over time and contaminate the water.

I have used Matala
They are much sturdier than an HVAC fiberglass filter
Easy to clean as well
