PVC Pipes Freezing???? Can't Post

Hi, I'm new to this forum and in the process of installing my pond. I'm planning on having a 13'x11'x~3' deep pond with a skimmer, and a bottom drain feeding a vortex drum.

How do you protect your PVC pipes from freezing and cracking during the winter. The pipes will be 20" deep at their shallowest point (near the vortex drum). I could probably plug the skimmer pipe with a swimming pool gizmo and drain that line. But I have no idea how to protect the bottom drain pipe. Also, how do you protect an external pump that isn't running? Do you need to disconnect it each year and bring it indoors? I do not want to run the pump all year long due to ice build up/diversion and possible draining of the pond. The temperature could drop as low as 0 F and stay below freezing for as many as 6 days in a row.

Thanks for your suggestions.

generally pvc arent suited for freezing temperature and soil movement. Cast iron pipes are used. Check the operating temp for your pumps. If left exposed, the freeze might crack the rubber seals in the pump. If your water depth is deep enough, the bottom might not freeze.
If you plan to drain fully, i remember reading somewhere someone filled the bottom drain with anti freeze. Dont know how effective is that. Cleaning later might be a problem as it is poisonous. Also remember a fully drained pond might be bouyant, depending on the natural underground water level. This might be a problem on the piping as the freeze thaw cycle might move the soil.

I would think that if your bottom drain freezzzzzzis . Your koi will also freeze. How deep is your pond? With the temp getting that low you might consider bringing you koi in for the winterWink
