Painting Fiberglass Can't Post

Hi,

Has anyone painted fiberglass before? I'm making my own fiberglass waterfall sculpture (samll one...) and I'd like to paint it to look natural. Of course, the paint must be non-toxic. I read on some fiberglass sites the paint normally used is acrylic paint and topped with polyurethane coating (UV resistant). I got my paint from art shops and there're some logos saying these are non-toxic, but I just want to be sure....

Thanks for any advice.

Hi, Andy

I tried to contact my previous fibreglass maker to check for you and was told the resin is polyester (nor sure how reliable) is mixed with some pigment which he does not know what brand. I thought may be that is their proprietory secret which he didnt want other to know. But on pressing, he asked me to check with pigment supplier. Cheers!

My uncle painted his concrete pond with ordinary acrylic paint meaning no logos that says its not toxic and his koi is healthy. He just let it cured for a week and wash before he used the pond. Just an experience with my uncle but I will not take the risk with my koi.

    Hi KoiFun ,

Can you tell me where can by the paint fiberglass.
Because recently I observed that my pond was leaking gratually.
And the water level was get lesser and lesser .

I heard some of the contractors said maybe the water was draining out through from
the cement wall due to when I building it without painting with water resistance paint.

    Thanks,
    chin..

You should be able to purchase the proper paint at your pond store or (believe it or not) from an automotive or marine supply store. You just need marine grade paint for fiberglass (like they use for fiberglass boats). It should say on the label if it is toxic to fish. Most marine paints are toxic before they cure, but once cured they aren't. You can even purchase online from many of the pond suppliers.

    Hi laz1,

Could you tell me where can buy this stuff of firber glass and black dye ?

As well , please teach me how to apply this all thing to paste on the pond wall for prevention of leakage.

Usually, I just saw most of the pond was inside is black but I didn't know what is this about.

When I building the koi pond without any knowledge and experience they contractors build it just using bricks and cements.
Hence after 4~5 months later, the pond is started leaking and water level is lesser.

    Hi ,

I use the fibre glass to adhesive on pond wall.
Due to leaking from my pond believe that the water was penetratred from the wall.

Beside on that does any water proffing paint is recommended for prevention of leakage?

    thanks.

    G'day mateSmile,
Sounds like this one is right up your alley since you just finished doing what it sounds like he's startingWink. Waddaya think? Block filler topcoated with waterproof paint? Been long enough since I read up on your construction I don't remember the details.

    Hi clchin,

If your pond is made of concrete with no existing sealant you can fibreglass the entire pond. But the cost will be pricey and its a messy job if you haven't done it before. If your ponds foundation is strong and only suffering from hair line cracks you best bet is paint it with sealant similar to this
    http://www.pondarmor.com/store/product.php?productid=16167
or a sealant made by either Cromelin or Bondall, both companies makes gppd quality sealant and I have tried them myselfSmile

Good luck and give us a bell if you need any more assistanceWink

    G'day LarryWink

Well it realyy depends what kind of crack we are talking about. Hair line crack no need to fill coz sealer will penetrate and at least I will apply 3 coates. Large crack can be filled with fresh cement mix some sealant before FG or sealingSmile
