Putting bottom drains in fibreglass tank Can't Post

I am planning to put a bottom drain in a fibreglass tank but are facing the following problem:

a/ cutting the hole
b/ supporting the whole thing while you fit the drain without damaging the pond

I actually though of this idea :

1) cut hole (slightly larger than bottom drain) in fibre glass tank
2) dig hole for bottom drain in the ground
3) place the bottom drain in hole and and fix all piping
4) hold bottom drain and pipe connection with fast set cement. Cement filled up to level with the edge of the bottom drain
5) place fibreglass tank on with the hole just over the bottom drain
6) seal the gap between the drain and the fibreglass pond

Question : what can I use to seal the gap? i.e. the fibreglass will have cement over its edge. Therefore, I will need something that can paint over the cement and water proof the connecting edge with the bottom drain and the edge of the bottom drain.

Any comments on my idea? Or does anyone here has experience that you can share?

Hi,

It seems a good idea but the chances of a leaky bottom drain is high (due to high water pressure at the bottom drain).

It is more advisable to build a bottom drain inside your FG tank, above the existing bottom wall with cement, i.e., running your bottom drain pipe inside the fibre-glass tank (along the bottom wall and up at the corner) and then drill an exit hole for piping a few inches below the water level. In this way, your water pressure at the exit hole will be less and stand less chance of developing a leak. The downside of doing so is that now you would have less depth as the cement bottom would take up some space (and some visible pipings in the pond). The plus point is - whatever happens, you still have a usable FG tank!

Building a proper pond with bottom drains is always a better solution unless your FG pond is of reasonable size and depth.

Hope this helps.
Cheers.
