Re-Do on pond filter (adding barrel and BD) Can't Post

I have an already established pond that is currently filtered by a pump in the pond feeding a filter box which feeds a waterfall. I want to make the waterfall bigger and am considering at the same time increase my filtration as well. i am going to purchase a 55 gal drum and make a koi38 style filter out of that. my question is, is there anyway to put a bottom drain into the pond now. it is already filled and lined with EDPM liner. what if I had pvc run from inside the pond down to the bottom, would that create a gravity feed? i dont understand how the bottom drain works, phsyics wise. should i even bother with a BD or just leave it as it is?

Also if koi38 replies here:

Jon (i think thats your name Smile ),

How do you clean out all that bird netting that is in there, or even harder, how do you get all the way down there past the bird netting to clean the japmat?

If you can add BD it will be the best thing you can have in your pond.............well apart from your koi of courseTongue You can add inverted BD or DIY it(cheaper)TongueSmile

The bird netting shouldn't get much waste at all, you can bundle the it and tie it for easy removal. The jmatt can be clean by pouring pond water from top or just give it a good shake once in a while. You have to consider your feeding regimen, stocking level to work out your maintenance. Of course if you're feeding water from a settlement you should get much crap in this type of filterSmile Good luck and let us know the results, will yaWink

and

The water as of now is going right from the pond to the filter, shoud i make a settlement chamber while im at it? is that what people refer to as a vortex? can that also be DIY'ed?

Hi there,
U can still siphon water out from the pond without BD. Read this how I suck n sifon the water from the pond.

Once the siphon working u can put in invert BD so that u do not need a pump in the pond but in the settlement tank.
It work well for me. I do not like the idea of cutting a hole in the liner n no proper BD to fit it.

Jon,

I have made the bottom drain in the barrel and also the inlet bulkhead is in place, both are siliconed over and are water tight.

My question to you is, if i installed 1.5" bulkheads and wanted to use 1.5" tubing, but how would i connect the 1.5" pool tubing to my 1800gph pump which has a 3/4" fitting. is it worth it to try and reduce 1.5" to 3/4", or just use 3/4" the whole way? I wanted to use 1.5" because i think the 3/4 inch was restricting flow, but if it had to be reduced to 3/4 inch anyway then theres nothing i can about it right?

If you need the pressure of your pump for some reason say head height or long pipe run the I suggest to use 3/4" pipe to connect to the drum. But If you don't have head height, etc issues then connect your 1.5" pipe directly from your pump using some fittings to suit the pump out put(3/4") to 1.5"Smile
I wanted to use 1.5" because i think the 3/4 inch was restricting flow, but if it had to be reduced to 3/4 inch anyway then theres nothing i can about it right?
If that's the pump outlet then its not reducing the flow. It's more of a head height design. As I said if you use a larger pipe then you're lossing pressure, not ideal for TT or BS application. But in your case, you can do as I mentioned aboveWink

Re: [Koi38] Re-Do on pond filter (adding barrel and BD) [In reply to] Can't Post

Thanks for all your help! One more question!

I got my barrel from a carwash place and it was used to hold some kind of tire cleaner. what is the best way to make sure all the tire cleaner is out? it is detergent like and no matter how much i seem to wash it there seems to be a residue on the sides still and a faint smell as well. any tricks besides just keep rinsing it?

Hi mpagri,

Option 1:
You can use potassium permanganate(PP) or condis crystals(both from drug stores) to clean it. Dissolved 2tsp of PP in a 10L bucket and dump it in your drum. Add air stones to aid cleaning and start filling the drum to the rim. Be careful as this oxidant will stain to golden brown and it will take a while to get rid off, so wear old clothing. Leave it for 24hrs before rinsing with water.
Option 2:
You can use bleach by giving the drum some really good scrubing and rinse. Then get a bag of swimming pool salt(25kg) and dump it in the drum. Start filling the drum to the rim and leave it for 24hrs before rinsing.

I still suggest to use test fish(2x) for both and let them be for 24hrs. If the test fish survived and the drum is good to go. Don't forget to add air for your test fishTongueWink I woill do the Option 1 coz it easierSmile

Jon
