Shallow natural pond filter Can't Post

I'm kind of feeling like an idiot here. No one replied to my question in the General Discussion Forum, but, maybe, no one has a situation like mine. I have a pond, dug down to ledge with a mud cover. 25' X 35" and max. depth 2 feet. I know this sounds stupid to Koi owners with deep ponds, but the Koi love it! There is natural vegetation all around and the pond replaces its water every 5-6 days with deep well water.

I am wanting to put a sort of filtration/aeration system in this pond because the temperature here recently hit 92 degrees and I could see the fish were struggling. I thought it would help if I put a pump in the pond (screened) that pushed water up the side of the pond and through a box with filtration (sand/rocks/bio-balls, lava rocks) and spilling the outflow over a 4' X 4' rock back into the pond.

Does this sound like a good idea? There is really no feasible way to raise the level of this pond right now, and the fish are having a wonderful time in there. Aeration and filtration are my concerns.

theres one reason why u shouldnt make a big shallow pond.

you will have huge temperature fluctuations. you should have built the pond a bit deeper than that.

A way to fix this is to add a oxygen supply using a big pond aerator,
or a big waterfall.

a big pond aerator

Just adding to what Eric has said, if you can acquire a commercial airpump or airblower, and connect these to a series of airstones placed inside the pond, this should increase the dissolved oxygen levels in the pond, and reduce the chance of your koi's gasping.
