Stand Pipes Can't Post

Hi Everyone,

I am a noob and this is my very first post.

Can someone please explain the concept of Standpipes and how it applies to the last sentence highlighted in red in the appended quote from one of Mike Snaden's article "A New Era in Koi Keeping" - http://www.yumekoi.com/articles/bkks_2003.pdf

"key features and principles
Two bottom drains with four inch pipe-work. One pump (per drain) of 2,000-gallons an hour
will draw water from each drain, (which should keep sedimentation within the pipe runs to a
minimum) and into the sediment chamber where the pump is situated. A standpipe will be
fitted to each of the sediment chambers to facilitate the flushing of waste from these
chambers, and the drains, if and when necessary. Standpipes will be used so that no water
will be able to settle and make bad water in the way that waste pipes usually do when
valved at the end of a pipe run
".

Thank you in advance.

Re: [showanichi] Stand Pipes [In reply to] Can't Post

Hello, I just read the SALES PITCH!!! Look, this person is not telling us anything NEW! I also like the part about the bio material emitting infra red something or other. #1 Why use a pump in the drainage area? The laws of physics indicate that water will naturaly FLOW into the drainage pipes ( gravity feed)! #2 no sediment chamber??? well here to he is a little wrong, as the sediments flow over and through the bio material, they will clog the bio material, thus suffocateing the good bacteria from the oxygen that they need to live. Ceramic bio material is fine, so are lava rocks, but with modern times there are better materials like, PLASTICS which are lighter and cheaper! Also this person mentions BAD WATER??? well, where would this bad water be ????
It is very simple, the act of water softly running over and through pourus material will naturaly provoke the growth of the bacteria that we want. and by the water running over and through a material, this will naturaly cause a disturbence in the flow of water thus oxygenating the water! so with these STAND PIPES??? do not worry.

Hi ayranjim, Thanks for the response. However, I still don't understand the working of a standpipe. Does it mean that in a settlemnt chamber that has a standpipe, there is also another waste outlet for flushing and both these are then connected to the main flush line? Sorry, this might seem like a silly question but I am new. So please excuse the ignorance. Much obliged.

the purpose of a standpipe (any ordinary pvc pipe) is to prevent water from exiting through the bottom drain of your settlement chamber, its a plug. the standpipe will fit into the bottom drain hole (usually a female pvc coupler) and will have a height exceeding the water level. when you decide to flush your settlement chamber, all you have to do is pull the stand pipe.

I do not have one bec I installed ball valves on all my bottom drains pipes. it serves the same purpose though.

Hi tangigi3,

Thanks for the info. I have also read somewhere that standpipes were popular in the 80's but nowadays most people use slide valves as costs have come down.

Cheers!
