TT Housing for Rm49.90 from Tesco (Malaysia) Can't Post

Hello everyone. I'm KK from Penang and I've been keeping koi in my 3100L liner pond for just over a year now.
I'd like to share with you a cheap and easy way to set up a TT.

I bought a 35L stainless steel laundry basket with ventilation holes (dia 29cm, ht 55cm) at Sungai Petani Tesco for RM49.90 about 6 months ago. I fixed it to the wall just above the holding chamber for the water return. Threw in ~600 bioballs and jap mat and attached a small water pump and shower head. It has been running for 6 months and there's no sign of corrosion or rust. I'm going to attach a second one next to the first.

Hope the info helps.

Your ogon looks huge, what is her length? If you get these stuff from SP, I bet you will also visit the Taiwanese koi farm there very often, if you happened to find out any good bargain, do let me know, ha!

Thanx for sharing your contraption. Looks like an interesting variation on the tt theme! Have you witnessed any significant changes since using this tt?

cheers..

Hi there.

pklow

Ya, the Ogon is the biggest, friendliest, and greediest (for food) of the lot (~25 kois). She was among the 1st batch of kois I bought from the Taiwanese guy when she was only ~5''; now she measures ~20''; unbelievable growth rate as compared to others!! Have never been back there cos his price is fairly steep.
Now, I source from a Mr. Lau in SP who imports directly from Taiwan. He contacts me whenever new batch arrives. I also bought some from Zen Koi at Tanjung Tokong. I don't think I can cramp any more into the pond for the time being...Blush

ChingChong

The name of the Taiwanese farm is Tainichi. If you come from Cinta Sayang Club, turn left to Jade Garden restaurant and go straight until you come to a set of traffic lights, take a left turn and go straight again. The farm is on your right ~ 1-1.5 km from the lights.

I got a OASE 'all-in-one' filtration system (rated to handle >x2 size of my pond) in a liner pond cos' it's much cheaper and space-saving. It turned out to be a BIG MISTAKE !!! 3nd month into its operation, the pond was plagued with string algae and the water was cloudy. I only had ~10 kois at that time (most of them were quite small). The installer emptied the water and cleaned the filters and brushed away all the algae on the liner. Within 2 weeks, the algae returned with a vengeance !!! I almost gave up...... then after reading countless enlightening advices of the Sifus here in this forum, I re-modified the filter and built myself a trickle tower, the algae problem magically disappeared over the next 4-6 weeks and the water has been crystal clear since then.

GCSpyder

Ya off course. TT has been a life-saver for me; clear water with no algae.......Recently through my foolishness, I had all my pre-existing kois exposed to serious infection by failing to quarantine 4 small new kois before introducing them to the pond. 2 larger kois were floating sideway. Started salt and antibiotic treatment and thank God, they all recovered...

BTW, just installed a Velda pressurised filter last week to act as a pre-filter so I can backwash it daily and this morning a second TT to handle the extra load.

Cheers.

Great! Another source!!! Wondering who is this Mr. Lau and how to get him???
100% agree with your comment on Tainichi, the price is just .... unreasonable, either dealing with Mr. Yeh or his son.

Hi,
Ple advise your NO3 (nitrate) level b4 & after using the converted TT Housing.
What is the height of housing. I beleived the drum is chrome-plated & not stainless steel. Very interesting & cheap investment.

Re: [edcheong] TT Housing for Rm49.90 from Tesco (Malaysia) [In reply to] Can't Post

When I first bought the laundry basket from Tesco, I thought it was too cheap to be a 'stainless steel' and I had similar suspicion of it being a chrome-plated although it was clearly labelled as 'stainless steel laundry basket' on the shelf. Well, it's withstood direct sunshine and rain for 6 months without showing any sign of corrosion..........BTW, My pond is on the north-eastern side of the house with minimal shade till ~3pm.

I started doing water testing only after the TT setup.
Typical results were PH~7.2-7.4, Ammonia 0, nitrite 0, nitrate 10 ppm, KH 4 dH.
PH seems to be stubbornly on the lower side even after ~ 7kg coral pieces added to the system.

You must have a very good water source for the KH and PH to be that low. 7Kg of coral should help, but it is very slow to release. You may want to consider Oyster shell as well, with some of it powdered to buffer it up more quickly.
BTW, I think your little TT idea is excellent. It can breath freely from top to bottom so oxygen/nitrogen exchange should be ideal. Great job.Cool

Sorry guys,

I am new. Sorry. What is this TT? Twin Towers? The one got shot down 9/11 or that one in Malaysia? How it works? I see only pictures but can someone help draw a diagram how it works or something.
