Trickle Tower help Can't Post

I have an excessive green water problem in my pond. It is in direct sunlight for almost as long as the sun is out. Eventually we will be putting a roof on to reduce some of this, but for now I am thinking og making a trickle tower as I have heard they work miracles with green water. My pond is around 1000-1500 gallons. Looking to spend as little as possible. Will be able to buy a decent sized bucket to construct in. What I am looking for is what a good size would be, not excessive sized, but good for my pond. Also what to put in it other than Lava rocks and bio balls as I will be putting those in. The last thing is where to get those things I need to put in it or what I can make them out of.

Thanx in advance.

I'm not familiar with gallons in Australia. Could you tell me, how many gallons equals one litre?

You have 21 aquatic inhabitants? How large are they?

I trust you went to my site? I would propose a barrel/tank/bucket of 10%+ of the capacity of the pond, built close to the designs I have on my site if you can, lava rocks going in first, topped by bioballs. Prefilter materials might be needed if you don't have a mechanical filter before this TT stage.

You can make them from garbage bins, huge plastic containers, barrels, stock tanks, etc, whatever has the capacity, and fit for your pond. Its possible to hide the TT when you output the TT with a long pipe away from the pond, and have a log, branch etc to hide the output pipe.

My largest fish is only about 6 inches all others are about 4 1/2 inches. I want them to grow badly.

Anyways, I do not know how many gallons equal a litre. We have a barrel that we can use, I was mainly looking for anything else I should use or could use to get rid of this green water. Yes I have visited your website it is what made me want to build one Smile. Thank you for the info though. Will be putting in a brush type thing to help filter out solids, but before it goes in it already goes through a mechanical filter so im not too worried about it.

Re: [koiguyoz] Trickle Tower help [In reply to] Can't Post

Another question just came up. Will all of the bio balls and lava rocks be used? The amount im pumping in will just drain out the bottom as soon as it reaches the drain, so how do I get it to fill? Does it need to be filled and if so wouldnt I have to match the amount pumping out as going in then? Thinking I will have to make a very small drain. Please help this is really getting me confused and frustrated.

The trickle tower (TT) functions by allowing incoming water to coat the lava rocks and biomedia as it falls through. The water isn't suppose to fill the TT at all, like in a submerged filter design, it merely coats the biomedia.

Given the water coming from the input pipe will cover only a small section of biomedia as the water trickles through, I used a rock positioned where the water came in to splash the water all over the place, so most of the biomedia would be coated in water, and at the same time, the splashing aids in oxygenating the water yet again.

The amount of water going in, will be the same as the amount of water going out. It might be best to consult with the individual in charge of the plumbing section of the store, and ask them if so and so pipe can flow this amount. From what I read, and experience, it is better to oversize the pipe, as the water that comes down from the biomedia could probably be sucking down air from the top as the water comes down.

Having the water build up inside the TT as result of smaller drains did not work for me.

I should really have a forum on my site to answer the questions lol. But for now, here will do.

Good luck and best wishes for your construction! I hope I'll be able to see some photos of it soon, maybe I'll even add your TT to my website (TT created by koineedtoknower).

Make sure you test for leaks before adding in the biomedia.
