A year ago after reading Mark's topic, I did DIY T/T from Trash Bin. Using the trash bin is get along with the over all scenery. Look like trash bin beside the pond. Now I have twin towers.

Good morning Tao

I love DIY projects and yours looks simple and affective. I have a couple of questions please.

What is the first stage of synthetic wool for? Is it to help distribute the water evenly over bio balls?

What is the charcaol for and how do u keep it from cloging the return lines. How often does chrchoal have to be replaced?

Thank u, Kiefer

Yes, it helps to distribute water evenly over the bio ball. Also, it helps to filtrate large partical not to enter to the tower.
What is the charcaol for and how do u keep it from cloging the return lines. How often does chrchoal have to be replaced? Actually I use it to support the bio ball bed. By product is the absorbing smell. I use large pieces therefore no clogging. I won't replace it since the main reasons is for supporting.

Thank u, Kiefer

Your twin towers look very interesting. I would like to know more.

What is the size of the spray pipe at the top of the tower, is it 1 inch like the intake pipe?

What size pump do you use? How big is your pond and what is the fish load?

Do you use any other bio filters? Do you use a UV sterilizer?

I think it would cost us a lot more to build than it cost you. Where we are the bio balls are priced individually I think they are about 10 cents each.

Yes, it is 1 inch pipe.

The pond + filter system volume is 33 tons. I have 30 mixed size of 30-60 BU Koi. I use 320 ltrs/min submersible pump. The offtake is splited in to 3 ways:
1. Offtake at surface as usual.
2. To Tower 1 and 3. to tower 2.
All have ball valve for adjustable flow.

Do you use any other bio filters? Do you use a UV sterilizer?
The filter system consists of
1xVortex for mechanical filtration
2xBio with Japanese Filter Mat
1x30 W UV

Yes, bio ball is very cheap in Thailand. 100 balls for 1/2 US$. You can use lava rock instead.

elow...Smile

Nice to hear bout ur DIY TT.. I mean wow! thats the cheapest i heard for the bioballs, 100 pieces for US$0.50 (about B$0.85, brunei dollar) here at brunei its dam hard to find cheap bioballs (or mayb none of them are cheap!). I dun noe whether they r cheating us or just playing dumb stupid..Mad and for ponds, we need thousands of them rite?! For example: 50pieces about B$16.00!!! even just getting 1000pieces cost alot and some do not even hav enough stock to provide that much...

After hearing this, mayb me ask someone who be going to thailand, mayb frens or relative, to buy couple of thousand for me, hehe..Laugh Me dun wanna use other media like lava rock coz, it clogged easily but also easy to clean (just dip in a bucket of water and shake it to remove the debris) but still, to hav that much in ur TT would do much trouble for me.. so its better to use bioballs since they are light and doesnt clog easily..

btw me heard that using charcoal is good for removing the smell of the pond water...but if when apply medicine or chemical into the water, charcoal must be removed... dunno the exact reason but me think charcoal acts as a counter reagent to the chemical added or mayb the chemical will stick to the charcoal... plus me heard from me uncle said (into marine hobby) charcoal is only needed in the first stage of the filter system.. meaning that charcoal is needed only during the starting off a new whole water change, after the filter and water has been established.. charcoal must be remove..coz it is not needed anymore...or mayb introduce other problems..

well...dun take the info above for granted...coz me dunno the chemistry behind it.. just only noe that old timers said charcoal good for removing smell...anyway just wan to share experience...lolTongue

btw...thnk for the info about ur TT and stuff

Cheers!

Hi Tao

This is what we have here in the Phils. and it cost around $0.10 each. Its pretty expensive but just by looking at it you can see the difference. Do you have this kind of bio balls in there? How much does this kind cost?

Hinz101,

Agree with you. Very expensive. I have never seen those kind of bio ball in Thailand. I saw one look closely but a lot expensive than the ones I posted.

Just as a reference, bioballs in Australia range from 10 to 20 cents per ball depending on who you go to, and how well you know them, and how much you get :D

In the US, from the experiments and results, TTs that are similar in design to yours, that being inside of a closed container, or inside of a container with closed sides, has not worked nearly has well as open sided designs. Do you normally keep the lids open? TTs are effective b/c of air exchange, puting them in containers that do not promote this limits there effectiveness from what many of us have found. I gave up on closed/semi-closed container TTs, did not function well enough for me. Those that have got them to work decently leave lids off and pump in air to the bottom with air pumps/blowers. Inside, I just put media inside a milk crate or plastic hardware cloth. Outside, I cover these hardware cloth frames with rock to make them look better and fill the middle with media, use to use lava rock, use bio balls and K1 now, strapping media in the ones that do not require support.
