Understanding mesh/micron

I don't understand micron/mesh sizing. I heard 1000 micron(metric) is too fine. It filters out fine suspended particles but the bio-film that will develop will eventually clog up this micron size. Is 500 micron larger or smaller then that? My understanding of micron is: "A unit of length in the metric system. One micron is equivalent to 0.00003937 of one inch." http://www.twpinc.com/twp/jsp/definitions.jsp So 1000 micron will be 1000 x 0.0003937" = 0.3937" If that's the case, then 500 micron will be 0.19685", therefore finer then 1000 micron? The other dilemma is US will use inches. ( I live in Canada, and I order stuff from the USA, therefore I need to know both metric and imperial systems) Mesh definition is "number of openings per linear inch, measured from the center of one wire to a point one inch distant." http://www.twpinc.com/twp/jsp/definitions.jsp So what does that mean really? More mesh means finer mesh? Here's something I cut and paste from a supplier. http://www.mechanicalmetals.ca/wiremesh.html Mesh Wire Dia. Opening Open Area 1 x 1 .120" .880 77.4 2 x 2 .105" .395 62.4 3 x 3 .080" .253 57.6 4 x 4 .080" .170 46.2 10 x 10 .0047" .053 28.1 50 x 50 .009" .011 30.300 x 100 .0045" .0055 30.3150 x 150 .0026" .0041 37.4200 x 200 .0021 .0029 33.6250 x 250 .0016" .0024 36325 x 325 .0014" .0017 30400 x 400 .0010" .0015 36I don't know what these numbers mean. Can someone please elaborate and explain I'm looking for a S/S mesh/cloth supplier in North America. Does anyone know a place that I can order from for DIY projects. Some companies are only looking for B2B and won't even bother with DIYers like myself who only want small quantities.
