Venturi, waterfall, skimmer and bottom drains Can't Post

Hi All,

I am new to this forum. I live in south africa and i am currently busy building my own koi pond. I bought a swimming pool pump purpoise 90/10 it has a pump rate of 18000 liter per hour. This pump will be powering my venturi and my waterfall. My idea was to be able to switch the waterfall of - because of the noise that it could generate at night and then only have a venturi on.

Do i have to keep a pump running 24/7 in my pond and can i connect my pump to my Venturi, waterfall, skimmer and bottom drains or is this not advisable?

Thanks

I'm not familiar with the particular pump you mention, but since most pool pumps are external design and not made to pump solids they don't generally perform all that well in koi pond applications. Hopefully yours will be one of the exceptions. Perhaps someone else on the forum is more familiar with this model and can advise you better.
As to water circulation, 24/7 operation is advisable as your O2 content and biological filtration will suffer at night if it is shut off causing wide swings in water quality that can cause stress and health problems for your koi. Bottom drains and skimmers are both good ideas as they combine to thoroughly clean and circulate your water, but I have a few questions.
What is the size of your pond and what type of filtration system do you plan to have. Pond size, flow rate, and filter design, are all key design considerations in order to have a healthy pond that is easy to maintain. Well designed systems almost take care of themselves which leaves you more time to simply enjoy your koiCool.

Thanks for the reply.

I am newbie at having koi. I have been doing alot of reading about each subject as i progress.

Well when i bought my pump - i went to my local koi dealer here in cape town and they only had swimming pool pumps and some submirsables to choose from. The dimensions of my pond is roughly 4m long x 2.5 wide x 1.5 deep. I have 1 bottom drain that is connected to a 110ml pvc pipe. This runs into my vortex chamber.

I havn't decided on a filtration system yet...meaning that i dont know much about it - still have to read about it. At my koi dealer is saw they profided sand filter's like a swiming pool sand filter except it has been modified to to make it easier to clean, and they had vortex bio filters with UV.

According to your dimensions your pond capacity is about 15000 ltr. Ideally your pump should turn over your entire pond volume once per hour so your pump is large enough.
There are several options available to you and which you take depends much on your space considerations and aesthetics. There are some very impressive looking self contained filtration systems available that cost a great deal of money and perform poorly. Many of us use DIY filters as they are much less expensive and give us the ability to custom design it for our own needs.
Basically you will need a settlement chamber with a bottom drain for heavy solids (I prefer the vortex design of Koi38's "Simple Drum Filter" seen here.)

One or two of those followed by a Trickle tower or Bakki shower, which then goes to the waterfall. If the Waterfall is designed properly the Bakki Shower priciple can be incorporated into it.
If you need to go with a prefab unit it would be wise to get brand names and model numbers of the ones you are considering and ask about them in the "Pond Construction & Water Filtering System" forum. Some of our members may have used the same models and be able to advise you on how good they really are.

Hi Guys, well thank you for all the info...i know it is 3 years later but i lost the link to this forum somehow.

Since 2005 i have build a 10 000L pond which was completed in Jan-Feb 2006. In 2007 enlarged this pond to a 32 000L Pond.

It is very intresting for me to see how far i have come in the last 3 years especially if i look at my questions that i asked back then.
