Water tank, vortex or settlement tank? Can't Post

I have access to a 1500 gallon water tank. I was originally going to do a large vortex, but usually I see that being done by turning these upside down and using the dome shape of the top as part of the tank. The tank I'm getting is defective and the top is cracked (I'm also getting it free for the picking up of it!) So can a flat bottomed tank still be a vortex? Am I really looking at it more now as a settlement tank? If so where should the water come in at (gravity fed 2-4" bottom drains) Should the pipe still come in with the water directed in a circular pattern or straight in..and then where do I take the water out? What is the best way to drain/clean out a flat bottomed tank?

Check this out. http://www.perigee.net/~jrjohns/conepage.html I tend to belive from my own little vortex that a cone isnt really nesisary if you piont the bottom pipe twars the bottom and are willing to climb in once in 10 years i would think you will be alright. Just remember that you need a top opening to your pump with a valve and you need to tee in the bottom suction with a valve. The top of the tank needs to be at least water level with your pond! Thats one mighty big hole there. search vortex on the site.
