Re: [ricky19] Will my TT design work [In reply to] Can't Post

I'm new here also, but hopefully this can help until the Sifu's can give you a more detailed response.

TT are trickle towers. The flow rate has to be slow to give the bacterial more time to do its job as job slowly goes down the tube. I guess the name explains it all: trickle tower.

BS are a stackle tower. Not tube towers like TT, but a building block complex of compartments on top of other compartments (If in America, milk crates stacked on top of each other. In Asia, beer crates. The general idea is there.) The inflow is at the top and there on is gravity fed. BS flow rate are a lot higher. I think the general rule of thumb is the turn over rate through the BS should be around 3x. More flow is good unlike a TT. Media material is BH, whereas TT can use almost anything such as bio-balls, lava-rocks and I believe ribbon media (not sure).

I don't have either right now, so I don't know which ones are easier to clean. It seems like if you can afford a BS, it is the best route to go b/c it's the best the hobby has come up with. It uses less space then TT because you need more TTs to equal the capacity of a BS. TT's tend to be more obtrusive looking b/c it needs the height (roughly 6' is the recommended height). DIY BS I have seen pics of are shorter (heard 6" is the recommended height also) and are more easily concealed. Also both units need lots of air to maximize efficiency. BH media in BS tend to be more expensive. Both units still need pre-filtering. TT are strictly bio-filtering, whereas DIY BS can have some upper compartments used used as a mechanical filtering b/f bio-filtering (I may be wrong about this).

I think this is a general idea of what BS and TT are. I know it's not very specific or detailed. It's just an overview. May the Sifu's come and clarify this for you. I'm just a rookie, and hopefully I'm not wrong.

Re: [njin9] Will my TT design work [In reply to] Can't Post

hey thanks for the inputs. I saw the real TT in my neighbour place. And you're right TT is more constructive and the flow rate is quite slow. My neighbour's TT is about 5'-6', it's like a tall fish tank. But here in the forum I saw some stacked milk crates with bioball where people claimed it as BS. I'm thinking of building a BS my self, probably over the weekend. I will share the picture later.

Re: [ricky19] Will my TT design work [In reply to] Can't Post

Before you begin, look into BH (bacteria house). I haven't figured out what it is exactly. It seems to be a magical culture that will do all the work. A cure that will cure all. It sounds like hocus pocus, but people swear by it.
You need to calculate how many kilos you are gonna need for your water volume. You should start looking for a supplier and prices for the BH, b/c it's not going to be cheap.

Hey can you get a pic of your neighbour's TT? I already have plans on how mine is going to look and work, but I would like to know how others are doing it. I hope his/her is a DIY and not a manufactured unit.

Thanks in advance,
Do

I've seen two tipes of BH. Yeah they are quite expensive (10kg=18,000 Yen). You can go to Momotaro website. What I heard they are the inventor of original BH & BS. Please check the following link http://www.yumekoi.com/articles/bkks_2003.pdf.
Momotaro BS comes in 4 levels (each levels can hold 60-80kgs BH)

thanks
