adding air tubing to bottom drain Can't Post

Could someone please explain to me how to thread the air tubing for BD through the 4" abs pipe? One of my drains is over 20' from settlement chamber.

Hi Jaylene,

If you planning to use a BD with diffuser it has a separate outlet for air line. But if you're planning to use a standard BD and then add a diffuser all you have to do is run the air line inside the 4" pipe. Use a food grade airline. You can get this pond supplies store or your local Koi ClubSmile

I would like a circular diffuser for the top of the BD. Anyone know where to find them? Would the long skinny blue "bubble wands" sold for aqariums work or would they plug up to easy?

That is exactly the one I've been looking for, thank you. I noticed this supplier sells replacement membranes as well. How often do you have to replace yours? Could you please tell me how deep your diffuser is and what size pump you use?

Thanks much,
Jaylene

Please tell me what the stand is for. I've read postings on DIY legs, doesn't your BD cover have legs to stand on? Is it a smaller pipe that fits inside the 4" BD?

Hi Jaylene,

You can call it stand or leg, they're the same. The standard leg for the standard BD is just like a normal pipe(2" me think). Here's what it looks like. The one on the left is my BD cover and the right is the diffuser. The leg is in the middle of this pic with stainless steel nipple attach for airline.Smile

And this how it looks like when assembled

Does this pipe fit next to the drain, if it is inside the bottom drain won't it block the flow of water from entering the drain? Crazy

still confused,

Hi Jaylene,

Looking at the pic you can see a circular thing in the middle of the BD, the leg sits in there. I used silicon glue the leg(only) and left it to dry for 2 days at least to give the glue the max adhesionSmile

The cover goes next then you screw in the diffuser into the leg. I forgot to mention that the underside of diffuser has a thread that fits into the leg. The cover sits about half inch off your pond floor as you can see from the picSmile

Thanks for the picture. Does the circular thing shown, for placing the stand on, come standard in all BD ?

Hi Jaylene,

The BD comes with a standard leg not the one I've shown you. I bought it separate together with the diffuserSmile

Hello Jon,

More questions Blush,

Is it better to put concrete over the entire length of pipe, from the BD to the filter or just cover the pipe with dirt and put concrete where the pipe exits the wall of the pond?

Should I add some type of rebar to the concrete?

Why put a plastic grate over the opening of the bottom drain, isn't it better to leave it open?

Is there supposed to be some kind of sump in the pond below the drain, or should it go directly to your settlement chamber? Why?

When I installed my BD I set it in a concrete around and under it. The 4" pipe that runs from BD to filter I poured concrete every 2ft. I then placed the steel mesh over the pipe and poured concrete floorSmile

Should I add some type of rebar to the concrete?
Steel mesh/rebar is A MUST in concrete, without it nothing will hold the concrete when it's starts moving/crackingShocked

You can leave it open but you don't want your koi getting suck inShocked in your BD ending up in your settlementTongue

No. Everything goes to your first settlement. The purpose of the settlement is to trap all the solids like leaves, dust and fish poo. That's why you need a drain in each filter for maintenaceSmile

Why do some people use flex tube instead of ABS for bottom drains? The cost is about the same. Wouldn't it be more prone to leaking?

Hi Jaylene,

If these ppl uses the right flex tube I don't think it will if done properly leak plus if it leaks its still airWink You can also buy this tube ready-made to sit on std BD and for what I've heard they don't have resistance than BD. I'm not sure if its true or not. I managed to get some of this flex tube and they are very robustCool I will be using it in my biofilter replacing the current tubbing in thereSmile

Hello,

I have found a dealer in California who sells disc air diffusers. They stock them in 8" or 11". Is there any benefit of buying the larger diffuser? Will it's performance rely more on the size of pump or width of disc?

Jaylene

Hi Jaylene,

The bigger the air pump the better and also the diffuser. Bigger diffuser can push more water up than an airstone unless you got lots of them, also a deep pond need a good air pump tho push the water pressure upSmile

What size air pump would I need for a diffuser on one 4' deep bottom drain as well as an air stone in the bio chamber?

Thanks much,
Jaylene

Hi Jaylene,

You need 40L/m pump in your diffuser to push the water pressure up so an 80L/m will do, but if there isn't much price diff between 100L/m then go for the larger one just incase you want to add pretein skimmer as wellSmile
