Re: [jotb] diy bead [In reply to] Can't Post

This is a direct quote from the link "Some have suggested that the slick surface of the beads is the reason for slow bacteria growth"
Is this true?
I am interested in this idea of using beads...

Hi jotb,
Just want to share the experience of using DIY bead filter.....Make sure you buy the beads that float...
Backflushing
In my bead filter, it is not working as what mentioned in the website, when you do a backflushing, the media will not have the 'stir' effect, even when you drain it, the bead has formed like jelly they just fixed themself follow the shape of drum/pvc, most of the debris will not be flushed away (pls refer to the modified picture below), thats why some of the bead filter manufacturer designed a 'cone shape' to ensure the bead will stir (you can google it with "bead filter").

After making some testing, I found out that the easier way to clean/backflush is to drain and then refill/backflush, then we can have the effect like shown in the picture on the right.

Another area, I strongly recommend you to have this bead filter as bio filter instead of pre-filter, it will clogged easily as pre-filter, I ever used it as pre-filter, and has to backwash it every week, then I used it as bio filter, now I only need to backwash it once in 2 months and I am very happy with the performance.

Rgds,
Edo

hi ego,

thanks for sharing your experience!
do i understand right, that YOUR beeds dont`t swim and because of that they don`t stir, or is it a construction problem?
i would like to have a flow of 15000 liters per hour and thought that is enoough motion for the beads to clean...
what do you have as prefilter now??
regards,
jotb

Hi Jotb,
Yes, you are right, my beads are not swimming at all, maybe it is because of the size of the filter itself, mine is the modification of sand filter and pressurised, which is around 10" in diameter and 1.2 meter in height, and the flow rate of the pump is around 4500LPH.
Currently I used japmap & Some net/rope as prefilter, then bioballs in 2nd & 3rd chambers, 1 pump 2500 LPH to pond, and another pump 4500 LPH to bead filter and then to pond. I clean-up the 1st chamber once a week.

Rgds,
Edo
