diy tt questions Can't Post

hi im thinking about adding a diy trickle tower to my pond but have a few questions before starting
1/ should i split the output from the pump (sequence 10000) or split the output from the back of the filter and fit a second pump as if i did the first option would the pump be powerfull enough and if i did the second option would the flow coming in to the filter be able to keep up with the output of the water

2/i can get stackable food grade trays from work should i cut the bottoms out and fit mesh or should i drill lots of holes

3/whats the best media to use

4/what size pipe should i make the spray bar out of otr can i just buy one from somewhere, does it have to rotate or will static be fine and how would you make a rotating bar
thanks in advance for the replies im going to get, i have found this site so helpfull

Dear jjbull

I take it your filter is gravity fed and your pump just pulls the water through it. Unless you would like to do a diagram. If the return is via a waterfall or venturi you won't need to split it just add some crazy pipe work.

In the one i'm making i'm gonna be drilling loads of holes if it starts to overflow i'll make the holes bigger, if the media starts falling through then i might get some mesh. lolTongue

I was thinking of using alfogrog and aquaclay. but K1 would be good if you can get it cheap.

I would go for a 3 or 4 inch pipe stopped off at the end and drilled in a static spray bar if your crates are wide you could drill holes at 45 degree angles as well as straight down. /\

Or you could make yourself a great big shower head.

I'm setting mine up with LavaRock topped off with Lithaqua. That way I get good biomass and carbonate buffering at the same time. No matter what media you use, adding your ph buffer, be it Lithaqua, Oyster shell, or Coral, to the mix is a good idea. That way you get good water flow on your buffer at the same time which will help to stabilize your pond better.

K1 or similar should work well. Lots of surface area is the main thing, along with plenty of tower height. According to the experts anything less than 18" won't do any good at all, so shoot for as much as your pump will work well with. 4'-6' is a safe bet.
