Hi mate- i also have a old hozelock 4500 filter- its a black box with plastic media and filter matting. Im currently making a barrel filter as it should work well for my application. Your pond is fairly big so it may be worth to add a couple of these barrels and use different media in each one. When koi 38 gets on the forum im sure he will tell you what he thinks is best.

Hi flint and welcome to forumWink

Mate for start your hozellock 4500 filter is undersize for your pond. Your pond is approx 8500L or 2245gal and your filter can only handle 1000galCrazy I'd say you need larger filter specially if you're planning to keep koi. I will be fun and cheapTongue

If you planning to build the drum filter you will need 2 drums at least and then you can have TT as well. If you want TT alone as filter I would go for BH mediaSmile Good luck.

BTW, what size is your pump???

Jon

thanks for the quick posts ,my pump is a aquashift 3000 with 1" tube no bottom drain . thats one thing i wish i had done . i agree with the filter its far to small. The problem is my garden is very small so size matters unless they will fit in shed away from the miss's eyesMad anyway i work for a canal boat company and we throw away loads of what looks like flocor. would that do for trickle or bio as well as matt. one last question is my uv good enough for the size of pond . many thanks i will take some photos soon . flinty

Hi Flinty,

You can always add inverted BD, the down side is you'll have plumbing in the pond. The positive side is you'll have clean floor and healthy fish, think about itWink

This may sound a lot of work but since you're pushing the water to your filter you can place your filters somewhere else where the missus could not see and have the water gravity feed back to pondSmile

I can't comment much about the material(flocor look alike). The things that worries me is it might leech some chemicals and harm your fish, maybe double check with your colleague about this material okay. You UV is small maybe something like 20watts if your pond is shaded but I'll go for 30watts atleast. My pond is only 10Tons but I use 55watts UVSmile

Jon

Hi flinty,

Looks good mate. You may want to increase the outlet, us 4in pipe to avoid overflow. Also you will need to drill some holes(1/2in) on the side of each containers for gas exchange. Somewhere near the rim of the container to avoid splashing water or leaksSmile What type of media you thingking of using???

rgds,
Jon
